Ershey's eyes widened when she heard Race's first comment. "Uh, yeah, I think I'm fine..." she muttered awkwardly, wiping the sugar off of her fingers.

"Good!" He said brightly, jumping up and holding the door for her. He would have to try and find a way to make this up to her, and Mush, for that matter.

"Thanks, Race," she laughed softly, amused at his behavior. "You're a good friend, y'know that?"

"I try," he sighed, following her out into the street and back toward the lodging house. Having finally gotten over his shock at what he'd inadvertently done to Ershey, his mind returned to the issue that had been weighing heavily on it for some time now. "Hey, Ersh...you ain't talked to Sapphy lately, have ya?"

"No, actually..." frowned Ershey, wondering where her friend ran off to. "I haven't seen her much... other than sleeping and getting up, she's been keeping to herself a lot these days. Sorta disappeared a bit too... is she alright, Race?"

"No," he admitted, shoulders slumping. He couldn't dismiss or hedge around the subject anymore; it was getting too damn stressful, and he had to talk to someone. "She ain't all right--she's in a...a mood, I guess, only it ain't just a mood, it's more serious. I tried talking to her, but I ain't sure I can even help right now." Which was the worst possible conclusion to make when it came to the person you loved. "And on top'a that, I think she might be up to something I don't know about."

"She's in a mood?" repeated Ershey, quite surprised that she didn't even confide in Race. "And why'd you think she's up to something?"

"I was talking to the new girl, Script...asked if she'd met Sapphy yet, and she acted all cagey, like she was afraid'a letting some kinda secret slip. I dunno, it might be nothing. I just wish I knew what I could do, y'know?" He wasn't sure which was worse--the possibility of Sapphy being mixed up in something dangerous, or the possibility that she wasn't mixed up in anything because she hardly even left her bed.

"I'll try talking to her," sighed Ershey, feeling guilty for not noticing what was going on with Sapphy. "Maybe I'll talk to Script, see what I can get out of her..."

((Oh, man Script's gonna feel cornered and totally crack under the pressure, haha))

"Thanks," Race said gratefully. He wasn't exactly skilled in the art of interrogation. "I mean, go easy on her, okay? Don't use Macbeth unless you have to," he said with a smirk as they approached the lodging house.

"I'll try not to," she chuckled softly. "'Sides, I'm sure Macbeth would have a different approach than me. I'm more the... ooh-look-I'm-nice-come-talk-to-me type."
((Can you imagine Ershey and Risk interrogating someone?? LOL.))

((Haha! They'd both try to be tough but end up being so friendly. Beth, however, would threaten to break fingers. ^_^))
"I'm sure it works wonders," Race said with a teasing grin. "Just watch out, she'll prob'ly try to counter it--and she bakes. No more dangerous distraction for an interrogator than a batch of high-quality brownies." He went up the steps and into the lobby, rather relieved that he'd confided in Ershey. What with Sapphy's troubles and the Spot-and-Raven debacle, he was starting, for the first time in a good while, to feel overwhelmed.

"I can handle brownies," scoffed Ershey. "You boys just melt at the thought of food... or that just might be Mush."

"I dunno," said Race doubtfully. "If you ain't tasted these brownies yet..." He headed for the stairs, ready to chat and gamble with the other boys until bedtime...or lurk outside Sapphy's room in case she decided to talk to him. Probably the latter. "See you soon, Ersh? Tell Mush I'll be around. And seriously, if you ever need any favors..."
