"Gotcha. See, I'm learning." Race went back to feeding him, carefully holding the spoon out of his reach. "And you don't gotta thank me, you know I love this kid. 'Sides, I'm secretly training him to be a poker prodigy so I can take him out hustling at the age of five and make myself a fortune." He smirked, imagining the gruesome things Rae would do to him if he actually carried that plan out.

"You try it and you're a dead man," Raven said with a smile on her lips. She knew Race would never ever dare.

"Six, then?" he said innocently. "Seven, maybe?" From his vigorous eating and his little flailing fists, Sean looked like he was ready to hustle right now. "Seriously, though--what kinda job are you gonna be looking for?"

"Same as before," she sighed heavily, "a house maid," Raven had hated her job, hated taking orders from people, but at least she wouldn't be stuck in a factory.

Race winced, remembering her stories about Annabelle. "Well...good luck, Rae. Maybe you'll find some rich folks who are actually decent this time," he suggested with an optimistic smile.

"Maybe, but I ain't counting on it." She said with a sigh. "If Spot ever comes back I'll castrate him."

"You're, uh...gonna be on your own for that one. But I can kick him afterward." Sean ducked away from the spoon, so Race stopped feeding him and draped a napkin over his shoulder--he'd learned the hard way that babies sometimes liked to spit up after a good meal.

Raven smiled, she couldn't help it. Race had gotten so comfortable with her son. "God I can't wait till you have kids."

"I dunno, I think I'll stick to baby-sitting for now," Race said, imagining two or three Seans, only with the ability to walk and talk and climb on furniture and open cabinets and throw things across the room. A waiter brought the check, and Race handed him the money before Rae could protest. "Don't even say anything, you're a single mother."

"yeah and you're a newsie!" Raven said and tossed a napkin at him. "You'll be a good dad when you're ready. Sean'll be jealous though." She finished off her coffee and then stood up. "you sure you'll be okay with him?"

"A newsie and a damn good poker player," he reminded her, getting up and hoisting Sean up on his shoulder. "And you know we'll be fine. Go find work." He kissed her cheek.

"Okay," Raven leaned over and kissed Sean goodbye too. She left Tibby's and walked by the window. She waved.
Sean had his head up and watched as Rae walked away from him. His mommy...where the hell did she think she was going!? Was she coming back!? He started to cry.

Race sighed and poked Sean in the nose. "C'mon, kid, don't cry. You'll see her soon. Let's go back to the lodging house, all right? Maybe we can visit Sapphy. You'll like her, I promise." He rubbed Sean's back and carried him out the door and down the street, wondering if a baby would be enough to cheer up his girl--though somehow, he had his doubts.

Once Sean was outside he forgot that his mom had walked away from him and left him with this guy. He liked this guy though so that was fine. He stopped crying and just stared at everyone as Race headed to the lodging house.
