Gypsy was out of the Refuge. Finally. Sure, it was all because of some do-gooding, bumbling idiot and his sap girlfriend who cried over everything, but what did that matter? She was out. She'd followed them back to Duane Street, mostly because she wanted a damn bed for a while. She probably wouldn't stay long.
She'd holed herself up in the attic because it was raining, and goddammit she wanted a cigarette. She sat on the floor, back leaning against a trunk. She smoked her cigarette slowly, idly rolling it between her fingers as she watched the smoke curl from it.

Firecracker tip toed up the steps towards the attic, occasionally glancing over her shoulder to make sure that she didn't have anyone following behind her. Well, not exactly "anyone," more like a very specific "anyone." Satisfied with her findings, she closed her hand over the doorknob and opened it slowly, slipping inside before she could be seen.
She closed the door behind her and leaned against it as she slowly slid to the floor, her eyes closing briefly. Was it always going to be this hard to get some privacy in this house?
After a moment, she slowly opened her eyes again, her face growing hot with embarrassment when she realized that, once again, she wasn't alone. Dammit. "Oh... I'm sorry," she quickly apologized as she rose to her feet.

Gypsy eyed the girl, frowning around her cigarette. "Seriously. It's a fucking attic, how popular could it be." She sighed, stubbing out her smoke on the floor and getting a new one. "You're already here, ya might as well stay." She held out her case to her. "Want one?"

Well, that reaction was slightly better than what she was anticipating! Fire nodded and slowly approached the other girl before taking a cigarette out of the case. She sat down across from her, her eyes fixed on the unlit cigarette that she was now holding in between her index and middle fingers. "Got a light?"

She smirked at her. "No shit." She struck a match from the pack in her pocket, lighting it for her before lighting her own. "So, who are ya, anyway?" She took a long drag, holding her breath in for a minute before letting out the smoke, slowly.

"Firecracker," she answered slowly before bringing the cigarette to her lips. She took in a slow drag as she leaned back against a large crate. Oddly enough, this was probably the closest thing she has felt to relaxation in weeks, if not longer.
"What about you? I don't think I've seen you around here." That was much of a stretch considering she hadn't really met many of the other lodging house residents during the short time she had been living there. Up until recently, she had preferred it that way. The less awkward conversation, the better. Yet, that seemed to be all she could find lately.

"Gypsy." She lifted a shoulder in a half shrug. "Just got here a couple days ago. Spent the last three months in the Refuge." She smirked, taking another lazy drag. She was used to being surrounded by people. They'd pack the rooms with kids to bursting. Now that she was out, well...she didn't much care for the pack of nosy goody-goodies that seemed to make up the Manhattan newsies. Maybe she should go to Brooklyn. People minded their business there.

"Oh, that's rough," she said as she exhaled, lightly tapping the side of her cheek so that the smoke came out in tiny circles. "I haven't been there, myself, but I've heard stories. Had many close calls, though"
She carefully ashed her cigarette into a nearby dust pile before bringing it to her lips once more. She chewed the inside of her cheek, unable to shake the feeling that she was unwelcome. Now, if only she could hurry up and finish this cigarette so she could leave! There had to be other hiding places in this house.

Gypsy smirked, arching a brow. "You? Ya look like a goddamn Irish saint, what the hell were you doin' to have 'many close calls'?"
Honestly, Gypsy didn't mind having the redhead around. She wasn't overbearing or obnoxious, didn't ask a bunch of stupid questions, and she was easy on the eyes.

"I'm hardly a saint," she replied with a laugh, her face growing warm with that admission. "I mean, I didn't do anything serious. Almost got caught trying to steal food a couple of times. Who hasn't though, if you think about it."
She finished her cigarette and snuffed it out on the attic floor before walking over to a tiny, dust covered window to look out at the rain. She turned her head to glance at Gypsy again, not feeling quite as unwelcome anymore. "Is, umm, is this your typical 'hiding place'? I don't want to encroach on your space or anything..."

Gypsy stayed where she was, but kept her eyes on the girl. The corner of her mouth lifted into a smirk. "Who said I was hiding? I just wanted to smoke in the house without that Kloppman guy getting his panties in a twist over it." She took a last drag before speaking again, stubbing out the cigarette on the floor. "Why?" She arched a brow at her. "You need a hiding place?"

"You could say that," she replied with a shrug, her eyes immediately fixing on the rain drops that we sliding down the window pane in slow trails. "Maybe not to hide, exactly, but a place where I came come to... think? Yeah, to think." She sighed, instantly realizing how entirely silly her reply sounded.
She took in a deep breath, trying to shake the feeling of the other girl's eyes on her back. "It's just hard t be alone sometimes, you know? In a house full of people."

Gypsy nodded, understanding, but she kept her smirk at her lips. "Yeah, and folks around here seem real nosy. Manhattan's always been for softies. 'S all Jack's fault. He's too fuckin' nice."
She watched her another minute. "What d'ya wanna think about?"

"I've noticed that, too," she agreed as she let out a small laugh. "Everyone always wants to know who you are, where you came from, your entire damn life story. What ever happened to privacy?"
She shrugged and turned her attention back to Gypsy as she pulled herself up to sit on top of a trunk. "I think about lots of things, I suppose. Mostly how in the world I ended up in this mess. The usual things that run through every confused kid's mind."
She looked down at her knees, almost expecting to get asked what she meant by 'confused.' That seemed to be the way that everyone in this house operated. Then again, Gypsy didn't quite seem like everyone else...

Gypsy raised a slow brow, regarding Fire thoughtfully. Confused, huh? I wonder... She got up from her spot on the floor, dusting off her butt. Instead of asking her what made her confused, she asked, "What mess? You in trouble or somethin'?" She moved to sit on a trunk opposite of her, looking at her.
