Maybe now that Snyder's gone, he thought grimly, but all he said was, "'Cause of the new warden?" If the old man was really that bad, he'd have to warn Script, find a way to protect her.

((ACK, that back story is fucking GENIUS!))
He shrugged. "Not just 'cause of the warden." He looked at him pointedly. "Mighta' been a while since you've been here. So you probably haven't noticed that the girls room is like a revolving door."

((SO MUCH TRAUMA. After this plotline, I think I might actually start being nice to Goblin. If he even survives this plotline...))
Goblin frowned. "You're saying a lot of girls are...disappearing?" People had always disappeared from the Refuge, he knew that. Some of them had shady connections that got them released. Others didn't survive a particularly brutal beating. No one knew what happened to most of them--except maybe Cav, judging by the way he was talking.

((Oh, Jesus, Script isn't going to know what to do with herself. In my head, I've already planned her first post-Goblin break-up post...))
"Well, disappearing from around here, anyway. From what I hear, they end up in the Points, or Brooklyn. Some in Harlem."

"The Points?" he echoed, something clicking in his mind.
The Eastman Gang owned brothels. Lots of brothels. And who better to stock them with than convicted criminals--poor young girls fresh from prison with no connections, no one to miss them or report their disappearance? "Of course," he whispered, closing his eyes as the truth hit him like a blast of cold air. "Goddamn it, of course." Why hadn't it occurred to him before?
He opened his eyes when he remembered he was talking to another person. "How do you know all this?"

He frowned then, just a little, something hard coming into his eyes before his sent it away and shrugged apathetically. "Ya meet people. Ya start to notice when they just disappear before their time's up. And a guy comes every once in a while. Always talks to Gypsy, real secret-like." He paused a beat before adding. "And Riddle."

He flinched at that, shaking his head. "She wouldn't..." He paused, realizing that he was being an idiot. "No, she might. I don't know. I don't fucking know her at all anymore."
And that was probably the most emotion he'd ever shown with a relative stranger, a fact he realized in dismay a second later. He was really letting his guard down. His face went blank again. "So how come you're telling me all this, if you think my plan's stupid and doomed to fail?"

He arched a brow at the show of emotion, then shrugged. "Figured that when you failed, at least you couldn't pin it on not havin' all the information." He paused a moment, then said: "Your new girl know you're still hung up on the old one?"

"I'm not hung up on her, I'd just like to think she wouldn't sell out other girls like that," he muttered, just before the guard stuck his head in the door and yelled for all of them to move out. Goblin followed the general stream of boys out the door and down the hall, with guards watching closely on every side as they were herded into a sort of workshop room. They'd be fixing shoes today, apparently, as if it mattered; it was all just busywork to keep them occupied so they wouldn't kill each other.

Cav snickered a little. "Right, okay. Whatever you say." He trudged along to the workshop, setting into his place. He did his work mindlessly, because none of it mattered anyway. He'd get out in a few weeks anyway, and then none of this bullshit drama would affect him.

With Cav sitting next to him, Goblin found it easy to watch him out of the corner of his eye. He had the indifferent act down even better than Goblin did, yet he'd given away another side of himself by showing so much interest--in everything from Goblin's devious master plan to his relationship drama. Either he had something at stake and really wanted to hide it, or the guy was just secretly desperate for social interaction.
"So...Footsteps seems to know you pretty well," he said casually, working on a shoe. He'd learned long ago that if you just fiddled with them enough, the guards would leave you alone. They didn't know how the hell to fix shoes either.

Cav glanced over at him. "Footsteps kept trying to talk to me. I finally let her." He added, casually. "You know her well?" The way she talked about Goblin, Cav had suspected a crush. It vaguely annoyed him. Vaguely.

She probably saved my life, he thought, scraping very intently at the shoe with some tiny tool. Knowing Footsteps, she must have modestly left that out of the whole 'Goblin and Riddle' saga. It came at the end, after all, and Goblin barely remembered it, seeing how he'd been bloody and feverish for days.
"Pretty well. I was in here for a year the first time, and we talked a lot. She'd help me and Riddle out from behind the scenes--her and Yankee and Bitter." He liked the way they all stuck together. It was good protection for all three of them, but that wasn't why they did it; they probably had the most sincere friendship he'd ever seen in the Refuge.

Cav nodded. He knew the Trio. Didn't understand them, or their relationship. But he knew them. And, surprisingly, he trusted them. More or less. "She talks about you a lot."

Once again, something clicked, and he smirked to himself. "Maybe you should try changing the subject."
