"You couldn't tell from my rant earlier?" She smirked. "People talking down to me. The ones that yell at me or deck me, I can understand, but I can't stand people treating me like I'm a fucking child. How 'bout you?"

"Cranky people," he teased before actually thinking of an actual answer. "And people that tell me what to do."

"Those might be second on my list," she said, leaning against the wall to glare at the stove as if that would speed up the cooking process. "Hmm. Did that count as my turn?"

"No, you piggy backed off of mine! C'mon, next one," said Risk excitedly.

She raised an eyebrow. "I don't know why you're looking forward to this." She considered carefully. "Best memory ever?"

"It'd have to be... Christmas with the family," answered Risk with a small smile. "Before everything got messy. When Adri was there and when Mom was there... everyone was just happy, no matter how poor we were."

Beth sighed wistfully. "We useta be happy too...kinda. 'Fore our mother left." She shook her head and shot a sudden anxious glance toward Jo, but her niece was still asleep in a chair, safe and sound. So she turned her attention to the beans. "I think these are done. Hand me a towel or something? And it's your turn again."

Risk nodded, standing up and grabbing a towel from the drawer. "Here you go," he said, handing it to her. "Let's see... what was the other place you and Adri lived in like? Good?"

"Thanks." She used it as a pot-holder to lift the beans off the stove and onto the edge of the sink. "I don't s'pose we've got a strainer? Or something that could potentially be used to strain?"
At his question, her eyebrows went way up. "It was...uh...well...eventful," she said at last. "I mean, I made more friends there than I'd ever had in my life, people who actually put up with me on daily basis. Sure as hell never saw that coming. But then there were the enemies. And the crazy drunks. And the fights, and the death, and...well, you've heard mosta the stories." She shrugged. "I guess it was a place that made you grow up."

Risk shrugged. "It sounds worse than the other lodging house," he muttered. "At least the people here are just... friendly and somewhat weird."

"For the most part," she admitted. "I guess they're well-rid of me. And you, for that matter." She wrinkled her nose at him and finally found a piece of cheesecloth in a cabinet. "Okay, stretch this out over the sink. And don't move. At all."

"They weren't big fans of either one of us, huh?" said Risk as he did as he was told.

"Oh, they liked you fine, but they didn't actually know who you were," she pointed out. "And they knew exactly who I was, that was the whole damn problem." Using the towel, she picked up the pot of beans and boiling water and carefully strained it through the cheesecloth, then held out the empty bowl for the beans. "Well, that was an exercise in trust."

"So did I pass?" chuckled Risk, gently emptying the beans in the bowl. "C'mon, your turn this time."

"Well, I passed, at least. I didn't scald you with boiling water," she pointed out, setting the beans on the table and getting out a fork. One by one, she speared the sausages, transferring them onto a plate while she tried to think of a juicy question. "First girlfriend. Who was she?"
