He stood up, hauling her up with him. "Then let's get the hell outta here. We'll get ya new clothes, save more money. I want ya to just be done with those people, Rose."

"But, Tyler, I have a lot of money stashed up in my room..." she said, her voice quiet so no one would hear and come rob her in the street. Then, she got an idea. "The fire escape! God, why didn't I think of that before? We can sneak up the fire escape, it goes right up to the attic, no one will ever see."

He nodded, taking her hand. "Then let's hurry the fuck up and then go home." He was barely containing his anger. If they ran into her father, the man would end up dead and he'd end up in prison.

Rose led him to her grandmother's house silently, making sure to keep to the shadows of the sidewalk. Once they got there, she led him around the back to the fire escape. She climbed up nimbly, stopping once she got to the second floor. Her father was in the guest bedroom, pacing.

It took everything in him not to barrel through the damn window and pummel the guy. Instead, he nodded for her to keep going. They needed to get in and out, and fast.

Rose climbed up the rest of the way quickly and, most importantly, silently. She lifted the window to the attic and slid through it. She went to her dresser, grabbed a cloth bag and started stuffing some clothes into it. Then, she crouched down and pulled up a floorboard, retrieving a wad of cash. In hardly any time at all, she was back out on the fire escape.

He nodded at her, keeping a lookout. Without a word, he moved behind her so she would head down first, him close behind.

Once they were back on the ground safely, Rose made her way to the sidewalk. Right as she was about to step onto it, the front door opened. She rushed back to the side of the house, pressing herself against it and biting her lip.

He pressed close beside her, holding her hand , squeezing it so she could know he wasn't going to leave her.

She heard footsteps strolling down the stairs, then walking toward the direction of Irving Hall. "He's going to look for me. Once he discovers I'm not there..." she looked over at Whiskey, her brow etched with worry. She really didn't know what he would do.

He held her close, meeting her eyes. "He's got no reason to know where ya are, Rose. And if he does find us, well..." he frowned, "I'll take care of it."

She sighed, biting her lip as she looked up at him. She just had to pray her dad didn't find them. The last thing she needed was for Tyler to get carted off to the refuge for killing a man, namely her father.
"Let's go," she whispered, taking his hand and heading in the opposite direction of her father. Her cheek was starting to hurt like a bitch, and she wasn't sure she could hold it together much longer.

They walked in silence, mostly because Tyler was glowering angrily the whole time. When they got back to the house, he led her straight upstairs. He dropped her sack off on her bed in the bunkroom, then took her to the infirmary. "Let's get ya cleaned up."

Rose plopped down on a cot, hanging her head. She felt exhausted and emotionally drained, and her life was completely different now. But at least she had Tyler. She had never thought she would care this much about someone, that someone would ever contribute so much to her happiness. But she had thought wrong.

He busied himself getting iodine and cotton swaps to clean her cuts, trying to calm his racing heart. He thought he might explode earlier, seeing her that way. He'd gotten into plenty of fights in his time, but he'd never wanted to hurt somebody so bad they couldn't walk. Or so bad they ended up dead.
If he ever questioned his feelings for Rose, he didn't now.
