He nodded and pulled her closer, cuddling with her the way he always had when she was upset, or when he was, or when they were both a little drunk. Or, in this case, all three. "I'm right there with you."

"It's fucking bullshit. The people you love are supposed to stick around. They're supposed to take care of you and you're supposed to take care of them. All I ever did was be there for him and he runs away, not just from me, but from Sean. His son. He left his son..." Raven glanced up at Race, "Thank God I have you."

"Right back atcha," Race said, smiling at her, and he meant it. He really didn't blame Sapphy for leaving, and he certainly didn't blame her for the rough patch she went through before she left--but he couldn't pretend it wasn't hard. Hell, he couldn't pretend he knew how he was going to get through even a single day without her.
And Raven--well, he loved Raven, always had. She was his best friend. They told each other everything, they'd laughed and cried together, they were always relaxed with each, always knew how to have a good time. And whether he was in Manhattan or Brooklyn, she was always there. Always, whenever he needed her. Like right now, for example, she was here. About two inches away from him, in fact. And for some reason, he found himself leaning forward.

This was Racetrack and his face was moving closer and closer to hers. She didn't move back or scoot away from him, just blinked and watched him come closer and closer.
Would it be so bad if he kissed her? Racetrack had never disappointed her. He had taken care of her son when his own father abandoned him. He'd listened to her cry and scream, rant and rave. They'd gone on wild adventures together. He was the true constant in her life. The only person who had never failed her, never disappointed her.
She closed her eyes.

And then he was kissing her. He was kissing Rae.
He'd thought about it before, of course. Not for a long time, but back when they first met. Yep, for those first few days after she stole his selling spot, after they started eating at Mama's and met Sophia and she decided they were a couple, after he taught Rae to play poker and helped her steal Spot's teddy bear...for those few days, he'd had a serious crush.
And then Spot Conlon, his best friend at the time, had claimed her, and he'd backed off and somehow extinguished all those feelings. And she'd been like a sister to him for years.
But now things were different. Their lovers had both let them down, and they'd fallen into each other's arms, and their lips met in a soft kiss, and it was...it was...
Weird and uncomfortable. In the extreme.
He pulled away and cleared his throat.

Raven opened one eye and had a sort of wincing expression on her face. She licked her lips and swallowed. "So...completely platonic, weird and uncomfortable right?" She said.
She took a sip from the bottle of wine, "Didn't happen."

Race took the bottle from her, downed another long swig, and looked her solemnly in the eye. "We'll never speak of it again." He spat in his hand and offered it to seal the deal.

Raven spat in her own hand, shook his vigorously and nodded. "Deal."
She cleared her throat and then grinned at him. She snugged up against him anyway. It was still Racetrack, her steadfast wonderful best friend.

((They are definitely among my favorite things ever.))
He breathed a sigh of relief; he'd been afraid for a moment that he might lose his unspoken cuddling license over this. And he wanted that license to be lifelong, no matter what the hell happened between Rae and Spot or any other guy.
"So, sorella, you realize that if I see Spot, I'm gonna punch him in the face, right?"

"Yep, go right ahead," She said and then grinned up at him. "He'll be so shocked. Can I be there? I'd be really angry if I missed it."
Raven idly twirled an unruly piece of hair around her finger, "Do you feel like you'll be alone forever?" She asked quietly.
Raven had been thinking about that more lately. She had a baby to take care of and that was an added bit of responsibility for any man to take on. Besides, her mind sometimes still went to Spot, of the times when they'd laughed together or when he'd held her in the middle of the night. She knew she loved him and she might always love him, but also that it was for the best that they were finished, wasn't it?

Race found that he could basically read her mind right now. And he didn't like what he was reading. "Rae, you can't go back to him just 'cause you don't wanna be alone, or even 'cause of Sean. You can't. After everything he did...and everything he didn't do for the two'a youse...you know you'd regret it."
It took him another few seconds to think before he actually answered her question. "And me...I dunno. I don't really feel alone, y'know? I mean, I miss Sapphy like hell, it actually kinda feels like I'm dying right now, but...I know practically everyone in the whole damn city. I figure I'll just make everyone distract me all the time, and then one day I'll turn around and she'll be back. Or I'll go hunt her down."

Raven smiled at the thought of Racetrack hunting Sapphy down. She could see him doing it to.
"I'm not falling back into his arms...It's just hard because I love him. I think I always will. I just feel like it will be so much easier for him to find someone else." She shrugged, "Well...if it has to be me on my own, it will be.

"Oh, c'mon, it won't be easier for him. Ain't you had two or three dates in the past couple weeks?" he said with a teasing smile. "Anyway, I know you. You'll be fine one way or another. And if you gotta keep loving Spot, well...it's not like you can help it. Any more'n I could help loving Sapphy all that time when she just wanted to be friends."

"Yeah but Sapphy is entirely different, she never did anything awful to you like run off to Chicago on your wedding day and abandon you with an infant." Raven said and then sighed heavily. "I try hating him and I can't."

"So stop trying," Race suggested. "Hating people's exhausting, and not really that productive. Anyway, I'll hate him for the both of us," he said, smirking.
