Riddle chuckled dryly. "I had connections, sure. Now I've got enemies. Can't think of a soul who'd still lift a finger to..." She trailed off. There was one soul who might. Though Riddle didn't know if she was free or even alive. "It's a longshot, but there's a friend I can ask when we get out of here." When I get out of here, she thought. "She might know someone who can scare some sense into Joe. Make sure he don't come near either of us again."

Zippy looked at Lena. "Is castration really off the table?" She was only half-joking, but ran a hand through her hair.

"Alright. I'm game. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to start over and get him and his stupid gang off my back. They are just a bunch of Jew boys but by god- they are ruthless."

"Jew boys really can be," Riddle muttered, thinking of Monk Eastman and most of his gang. "And if you really want to cut any...parts off, I leave that to you. Mark and Simon might not get along with Joseph, but they'll still hunt me down if he suddenly turns soprano." She touched the bruise on her face and then fingered the bloody knife in her pocket. What a night.

"How...dangerous, are they exactly? They told me they'd leave me alone as long as I stay away from this neighborhood- obviously I didn't- but do you think they'll come after me? They aren't murderers, right?" Zippy rubbed her temples, beginning to get a headache. She had been told that if she was going to break the engagement she never wanted in the first place, she'd have to disappear. Which was no problem to her, but now she didn't want any of this hanging over her head.

"Mark and Simon ain't gonna murder no one," Riddle said. "'Least...a year ago, they wouldn't've." How much could her brothers have changed? "Joseph and his gang, though...I dunno. Joe useta torture animals when we was kids." Why am I bothering to tell you all this? I can't ever let you leave this room.

Zippy snorted. "I could believe that. You know I didn't want to be with him, right? Your parents were just so kind to me. And Joe would buy me all these things, so I figured that I had a good thing going until I realized what a lunatic he was." She sighed, shrugging. "I blame the orphanage."

[Riddle]

"What, for making you all fucked up and in need of a loving family?" She rolled her eyes. "Everyone's got something to blame, right? I've got the Refuge." Only I'm pretty sure I'd win the fucked-up contest. By a mile.

[Zippy]

"Hey!" Zippy snapped, glaring at her. "He was the rabbi's son! How the fuck was I supposed to know he was a wacko?"

[Riddle]

"It is kind of the perfect cover," she admitted with a dark chuckle. "At least you didn't grow up with him." She found the wine bottle and took another long swig. She was starting to feel it. That couldn't be good; if she got drunk for the first time in over a year, who knew what she might say?

[Zippy]

"So...you haven't seen your family? Do they know you're back?" Zippy asked, trying to make conversation.

[Riddle]

She snorted. "Obviously not, or I'd be going to them for food 'stead of pilfering it from my father's temple." She set down the bottle and leaned against the wall, a little lightheaded. "They wouldn't give a damn. Well, Simon might. But prob'ly not even him, now that he's got a fucking baby."

Zippy reached for the wine, taking a swig. "I don't think thats true. I'm sure Simon missed you, he didn't like that I slept in your room for those 2 months."

[Riddle]

She shrugged. "Whatever. It don't matter. I can't go home anyway. I really oughta just skip town."

[Zippy]

Zippy looked at her. "Where ya think you're gonna go?" Zippy had been thinking the same thing but was obviously not nearly as brave as Lena to actually leave. At least in New York she had a place ot stay and some friends.
