He lifted a shoulder. "I know a bit. I mean, it was kind of a big deal." He actually loved Civil War history, but he didn't want to look like a huge nerd.

Zippy smiled at him. "Would you have fought in it?"

He chewed on the inside of his lip, thinking about it, then nodded. "I would have. It would have been the right thing to do." The corners of his mouth turned down in a serious expression.

Zippy looked at him fondly. "I could see you in war, Dave."

He smiled at her, a little sheepishly. "I don't know how brave I woulda' been, but I would have done my job. I'd probably be the guy who wrote home a lot, and all the historians woulda' used my letters in books later."

"Like this guy?" Zippy pointed to a painting of a soldier writing a letter. "Yep, I could see it." She reached for David's hand.

He took her hand, playing with her fingers gently. "Mustuv' been hard, being away from all the people they cared about, trying to fight for the greater good. Some of these guys were my age. They died before they ever got to live..." He realized he didn't want to end up that way.

(( they are really starting to grow on me!))
Zippy nodded, looking up at him, watching his face. Suddenly she couldn't tear her eyes away from him, even though there were new paintings and art around her that she hadn't had a chance to explore yet.

((I know! Dave lets me be deep and philosophical, hehe. And he's such a sweetie <3))
He realized she was looking at him, and he angled towards her, tilting his head down at her. He licked his lips, meeting her eyes. His voice was soft when he spoke, "Hey, Zip..?"

Zip gulped, trying to even her breathing. What was happening to her? She hadn't expected this to happen.
He had such beautiful blue eyes.
She mumbled to herself in Yiddish before reaching for his face, gently caressing his cheek. Just satisfying the urge to touch him made her feel so much better. Grounded, even. "You deserve better than this. All of this."

He gave her a curious look, letting himself lean his cheek against her hand. "What's better than you, Zip? You're--you're beautiful, and smart...you're funny, and sweet...and--and I like you..."

"I have an ex-fiance who used to beat me and if I step even a foot into any neighborhood on the Upper East Side he'll kill me," Zippy blurted out, dropping her hand and giving him a shy smile.
"See? You need better. Wow, look at this Gettysburg painting, it really captures all the...blood."

He stared at her, mouth dropping open and eyes widening. "Wha--hey--you--you can't just say somethin' like that, Zippy, and then go look at a painting." He took hold of her arm gently, turning her back to him. "Zip...did--are you okay..?" He gave her a concerned look, brushing his thumb over her arm as he held it.

"Yes, I'm fine, now," Zippy replied, offering a reassuring smile. "New York is a big city, Dave. He doesn't know where I am nor will he come looking for me." She took his hand. "I just don't want you to think I'm perfect. I'm easily manipulated and trusting, which is odd considering I have major attachment issues. His family offered me a place to stay and his mom cooked home-made dinners. I was in love with the thought of him, and his family."

He chewed the inside of his lip, holding her hand, bringing it to his mouth and holding her fingers against his lips. "Zippy...I'm sorry you had to deal with all that...I wish I could make it better." She was so sweet. It wasn't fair that the nice girls always ended up with jerks.
