"You don't have to make it better," Zippy pointed out, staring at a painting of an African American running from slavery, "I already did."

He nodded a little, eyes still on her. "You don't have to do it on your own, Zip. I--I'm here..."

"I'm over it, okay? It's been about a month and I'm fine. Can we drop it?" Zippy wandered around the exhibit, looking at other paintings. She was upset she had let it slip out, but it felt right- he needed to know. He couldn't keep putting her on that damn pedestal. She was tainted and he needed to know it.

He winced when she snapped at him, not following after her right away. He frowned, annoyed now, because he was being nice and being genuine, and she was blowing him off. "You're clearly not over it, otherwise you wouldn't have just barked at me for caring."

"Yeah, well!" Zippy refused to look at him. Shit he was...much more amazing that she thought. "I just...didn't want to pretend that this could...you know, work."
So she had made the mistake of trusting Joseph. He was the rabbi's son, for goodness sake! It wasn't a bad call. But then why was she still dwelling? Did he ruin her for everyone else now? Now David - the sweetest guy she had ever met- probably wouldn't want her.

He frowned. "Who's pretending? 'Cause I'm not. I like you, Zippy, and I really want you to give me a chance."

Zippy smiled, but her eyes were still sad. "Really? I mean- you aren't freaked out or anything? Because, you know Dave, we come from really different places..."

He sighed, crossing over to her, standing toe to toe and looking down at her. He pressed his forehead against hers lightly. "I'm more freaked out by the idea that I really suck at dating girls, and that I'm totally gonna screw this up and embarrass myself in front of you."

Zippy leaned her face up and kissed him softly on the lips. "I hope you do, it'll take the pressure off me." She smiled at him, completely cheered up.
"Look at this!" Zippy peeled away and pointed at a nearby painting. " Wonderful painting of Abe Lincoln- I wonder if he was actually Honest?"

David didn't hear a damn word she just said. He was too focused on the fact that she'd just kissed him. His face tingled. He'd never been kissed before.

"I bet he was just like you," Zippy continued, tilting her head at the painting. "I should start calling you Honest Dave." She looked over her shoulder at him.
"David?"

He blinked at her. "I--you kissed me..." He carefully walked over to her. "You did it too fast...you gimme a chance to respond."

Zippy turned to face him, beaming at him and crossed her arms over her chest. "Okay. Just let me know when you are ready."

A smile played at his lips. "Well, you could do it again, now. Now, I'm prepared."

Zippy shrugged. "Eh, the moment has passed now. So about Honest Abe, here. Why do you think his eyes look so sad?" She sent David a teasing grin as she turned away from him, back towards the painting.
