Sammie snorted. She should've known. It all started because of a girl. That's how most fights start, doesn't it? And now the gang was in pieces. All because of Goblin's girl.
"Of course," muttered Sammie, finishing off her drink. "Figured."

"Yeah," Riddle muttered, finally polishing off her own drink. "He sure knows how to pick 'em. First me, then this fucking delicate creampuff who didn't have a clue what she was doing." It should've been you, a nasty voice in her head whispered. You would've been the one helping him, if you didn't betray him. She told the voice to stuff it and wished she had more booze.

"He gets around, doesn't he?" muttered Sammie sarcastically, eyeing the bar for another drink she could possibly swoop in. Why the hell was she suddenly so interested in Goblin?

Riddle smirked at her. "Why? You met him or something?" She couldn't imagine what Goblin would have been doing in Five Points. Or what Sammie was doing on the Lower East Side, other than fleeing the chaos that was Monk Eastman's gang at the moment.

"I guess you could say that," answered Sammie, reaching over the bar and grabbing a newly opened beer bottle as the bartender turned his back to grab something else.

"So tell me about it. I've told you a whole heap'a stories." She eyed the bottle. "And you better be sharing that."

"If you can distract him, I can get another one," smirked Sammie, ignoring her first comment.

Riddle gave her a long, shrewd look, not fooled at all by the evasion. "I'll be waiting for that story," she said, then got up and sashayed over to the bartender. And he apparently went for the down-and-out, desperate-criminal look, because she had him chatting and smiling and touching her arm flirtatiously within a minute.

Sammie had to admit, the girl was definitely good. Once she saw the bartender reach over to touch her arm, Sammie bent forward and snatched the nearest bottle she could find and sat back down, pretending as if nothing had happened at all.

Riddle was suddenly terribly sorry, but she had to cut the conversation short--her friend was waiting for her. And with that, she returned to her stool, grinned at Sammie, and grabbed the new bottle, popping off the cork. It felt so damn good to drown herself in liquor; it was all she really had left. "So. Talk."

"Goblin's people kidnapped me," replied Sammie as if it were nothing. "And he tried -- well, attempted to torture me but he somehow let me go." She shrugged, taking a swig from her bottle.

She blinked. "He's...torturing people now?" She said it like she didn't care, but she was suddenly even more absorbed in the beer.

"He could barely do anything," said Sammie, not sure whether she should feel proud or sorry for him. "He just talked to me the whole time."

"Oh." Somehow, she couldn't keep an enormous amount of relief out of that statement. She blamed the whiskey and beer.
