"I can't imagine how he got those newsies to help him out," muttered Sammie, in awe of Goblin's persuasive abilities. Maybe they all owed him something. Or he was just really good at returning favors.

Riddle looked at her like it was obvious. "He manipulates people. It's...what he does. Reads into 'em every way he can, figures out what they want or what they're afraid of, and finds a way to use that to get 'em to do what he wants." She smirked again. "I dunno whether I taught him or he taught me or we both just happened to find each other like a couple'a fucking kindred spirits."
My, but she was talkative lately. Something had stripped most of her caution away, and it wasn't the alcohol. No, it was probably the knowledge that she had finally gone too far. She was running from something she could never escape, and until it caught up to her, she had this giddy feeling of freedom--like she could say and do whatever the hell she wanted, because nothing mattered anymore.

"Is that why he talks instead of doing something?" asked Sammie. "I couldn't understand why he didn't hit me or cut me already in that basement..." She was still surprised at how lucky she was to get away. Most kidnappers didn't let people go that quickly.

"Never knew him to hit anyone," Riddle said thoughtfully. "I'm not even sure he knows how." Which was actually impressive when you thought about it, since he'd managed to survive a year in the Refuge on brains alone. Barely survive, but that part was her fault. She winced at the memory.

"You two were really close, huh?" noticed Sammie, quirking an eyebrow at her.

Riddle downed some more beer, her voice deliberately casual. "I guess he thought he was in love with me or whatever." She snorted cynically. "I mean, he was fifteen. We were both idiots. Really smart idiots," she added with a bit of a laugh.

"Would you want to see him again?" asked Sammie curiously, still remembering where the lodging house was from Irving Hall. It wasn't that far, really, just a short walk.

Her eyes widened in actual panic, and she almost dropped the bottle. "Oh, trust me, he don't wanna see me again." He'd been quite explicit about that.

Sammie smirked, now suddenly interested. "Aw, why not?" she said, smiling at her.

She glared at the girl, suddenly hard and defiant. "'Cause I sold him out. To Warden Snyder. And he's got scars like you wouldn't believe."

"You were his girl and you sold him out?" she said in surprise, eyes widening. She took another swig from her beer, almost finishing it. "Some friend."

Her glare intensified. "They were gonna sell me to one'a their fucking brothels if I didn't. They overheard me talking about the whole Eastman arrangement, and I only had one thing to bargain with. What would you have done, huh?"

Sammie stared right back at Riddle. She didn't know. She was never stuck in that kind of situation before. "Probably the same thing," she finally answered after a couple moments.

She gave her a cold, triumphant look. "See?" After a long pause, guilt got the better of her. She had to admit the worst part. "He never did nothing...I mean, he goes for revenge, y'know? I figured he'd be plotting against me, but all he ever did was come back one day and help me finally get outta there."

"Instead, he just went for the bigger picture," smirked Sammie, shrugging. "And it just means he still cares for you. Maybe." After you sold him out. She was a little bit jealous. Just a little bit.
((No worries! Gnight! <3))
