"Well, just as a back up plan, where does Sarah work? Maybe they'll hire me, too." Zippy asked, nodding to the waiter to bring over two more glasses of wine.

"She's working at a hat shop. She's gotten pretty good. Sometimes they take on people during the holidays, so you might get lucky now." He took his new glass of wine, taking a deep drink.

"Hmm. That would be weird though. Working with your sister," Zippy said, shrugging. "Did I ever tell you that I had 2 brothers?"

He shook his head. "You didn't. What are they like?"

Zippy shrugged. "I don't know anymore. I haven't seen either of them since I was 10."

He frowned in confusion. "What do you mean? What happened?"

"Umm..." Zippy shifted in her seat, a little uncomfortable. "My family was really poor. My parents, and my brothers, Eli and Eric, immigrated here from Russia. I was born here. My dad split soon after that, he couldn't take care of us and we were a burden I guess. Anyway, my mom got sick too and there was no one to take care of us. The three of us were sent to the orphanage, and Eric left too. I was with Eli for awhile. It's kind of why I've stayed in New York even though I'm dying to get out," Zippy admitted, shrugging. "I keep hoping I'll run into one of them."

He took her han, squeezing it, giving her a sympathetic look. "Oh, Zip...babe, I'm so sorry." He couldn't imagine what that'd be like. He forgot sometimes how lucky he was to have his family.

Zippy shrugged. "Eh. That's life sometimes, right? It's kind of why I always hang around food pantries of the local synagogues. I have a feeling I could find Eli that way." Instead of crazy wife-beating boyfriends. "Anyway forget about me. I found you and I'm so happy."

David clutched her hands in his, bring them to his lips, kissing her fingers. "I'm gonna try real hard to keep it that way, Zippy. I promise."

"That's a silly promise," Zippy replied with a small smile. "Just promise to be honest with me and we'll always know how the other is feeling and thinking. I rather have that promise."

He nodded, letting himself nibble on her fingertips. "Then I promise that."

"I bet Eli would love you," Zippy added with a smile. "He would think you take good care of me."

He blushed, smiling at her. "I wanna take care of you, Zip. You deserve it. You, like...the best thing that's ever happened to me..." he looked down sheepishly, holding her hands to his lips and letting them linger there.

((oh god he's so sweet.))
Zippy stared at him, her eyes on the verge of watering. "th-thank you," she replied softly, looking away to collect herself. "you're the greatest thing that's happened to me too."
