Coyote tipped his head toward the gate, indicating she should follow him as he left the distribution center. "My favorite spot's out by the harbor, actually. Y'know, lookin' out towards the bay?"
He paused for a second, a wistful look flitting across his face, but he quickly replaced it with a wink and a smile. "Just so long as we don't go too near the water. I know you Brookies practically live in the stuff, but us coyotes don't like gettin' wet."

"'S like a dog, but they live out West in the desert," Coyote explained, holding the gate open for her. "And, o' course, in the forests of Scotland where I grew up."

"Ahhhhh..." Kennedy nodded, thinking she understood.
((And may I just say... YAYYYYY!!!! HELLO! ))

((Hi! I'm finally done with all my shit, so I'm back for good now! I'm super excited to catch up on all the storylines I missed in the past week.)) "So you don't really got a nickname, do ya?" Coyote said, more of a thought-out-loud than a question. He didn't know much about Brooklyn, but he had noticed that the few newsies that came over to this side of town weren't as big on nicknames as their Manhattan counterparts.

Kennedy just shrugged grandly, arms wide out at her sides.
"Never got attached enough to anyone to give me one."

Coyote gave her a quick once-over. "I'd probably call you Goldilocks."

Kennedy scrunched up her nose.
"I never did like borrowing," she explained, shifting her papers to her other shoulder. "But I love that story. Sapphy's read it to me many times."

"It used to be one of my favorites when I was a kid," Coyote agreed. "My mam would - "
Abruptly, he cut himself off. There he was, letting his guard down again. He had almost mentioned his da when she asked about coyotes, and that should have been his first warning sign. There was something about Kennedy that made him run his mouth off around her. She just felt trustworthy, what with her honest eyes and innocent smiles. It also didn't hurt that she seemed like she'd probably forget anything he told her within minutes.

Kennedy looked at Coyote, waiting for him to finish. When he didn't, she knew it was just another dramatic newsie past that couldn't get delved into.
She sighed and changed the subject.
"How old are ya?"

Coyote was glad for the shift in topic. Some of the other newsies he knew would have pestered him for hours if he let something that personal slip.
"'Round seventeen. Why? Too old for you, Miss Goldilocks?" he teased.

"Maybe for you. I'm nearly fifteen!" she said, hands defiantly on her hips.

"Oh, of course," Coyote said, his voice serous as he tried to hide a smile. "Very big number, fifteen. That's when you gain all the wisdom of the world and the path of your life becomes clear." He nodded wisely.
They were getting close to the harbor now, and he could smell the salt of the bay beginning to creep into the air along with the shouts of the boatmen.

Kennedy scoffed.
"Yeah, like two years is a big enough difference." Looks like Coyote was just like everyone else. Always patting her on the head and treating her like a child -- which she realized she acted like one often -- but it was only when they discovered her age that they said things like that.

Coyote held up his hands defensively, which was hard for someone who was already holding a stack of papes under his arm. "Cool your horses, darlin'. I was only teasing. If there's one thing I've learned from being a newsie, it's that we all had to grow up too soon. Even if sometimes we don't want to admit it, none of us ain't really kids no more."
