Firecracker woke up and instantly felt the annoying ache of late-night hunger pains. Why did they always have to come at the most inopportune times??
Reluctantly, she slid out of her bed and tip toed down the stairs and into the kitchen. She began to rifle through the cabinets for something, anything, to eat when she heard a rustling sound coming from the table behind her.
She turned around slowly, unable to see anything except the outline of the other figure in the darkness. "Oh, I'm sorry," she apologized softly. "I didn't know anybody else was in here..."

((Specs comes to the rescue! And he needs to come out of hiding, anyway )) "Looking for something?" said Specs as he offered her a box of cookies he'd found in the pantry just earlier. It'd been another night out with Skittery and he reeked of smoke. Even though he knew he wasn't seeing Tag anytime tonight, he still felt horrible about it all. Hence, the late night munchies.

"That'd be perfect, thanks," Fire responded with a nod. She walked over to the table slowly and reached into the box for a couple of cookies.
"Gotta love late night snack urges," she joked before taking a bite of a cookie. She looked at the boy, studying him for a brief moment. "Although, you don't look like you've been to sleep yet."

Specs nodded shyly. "Yeah, uh, I just got home a couple minutes ago..." he answered, wondering whether the girl was new. She didn't look familiar to him at all. He just chalked it up to not being around the lodging house enough. That's what happens you've got a girlfriend and bestfriend to attend to.

"I'd be careful if I were you... The others get kinda mad if you tiptoe too loudly in the bunkrooms at this hour," Fire joked, smirking as she finished off her cookie and reached for another.
She stopped and studied the boy for a moment, her forehead wrinkling. "I don't think I know you... then again, that's not exactly hard to do since I only know about three people here."

"Yeah, well, the boys sleep like nothing's ever goin' to bother them so I think I'll be fine," he chuckled, grabbing another cookie.
"Specs," he smiled, offering his hand to her. "What do you go by around here?"

"Firecracker," she responded after swallowing the bite of cookie that was in her mouth. She took his hand and shook it briefly.
"Must be nice, you know, to now have to worry about wakin' anybody up walking through the bunkroom. The girls here are such light sleepers that I'd almost rather sleep in the attic if I'm coming in late!"

"You always come in late?" asked Specs curiously, finishing off his cookie and now on the hunt for some milk.

"Not always, no," she said with a shake of her head. "Actually, only once." She felt her face grow hot as she remembered that night; getting caught in the rain with Wraith and then eventually falling asleep in the attic.
She shrugged casually and pulled herself up onto one of the kitchen counters, sitting on top of it. "I don't mind it though."

"Sneaking in late?" smirked Specs, still looking for milk.

"Tonight? Or that other time?" Fire asked as she watched her feet dangle over the edge of the countertop. "We had gotten caught in a rainstorm. Didn't want to wake the other girls."

"Oooh, a rainstorm," teased Specs, giving up and sitting next to her on the kitchen counter. "What was he like?"

He?? Oh, she knew this was going to happen! She swallowed hard and her face turned bright red. She thought for a moment, trying to figure out the best ways to describe Wraith without giving away her identity -- or true gender. "He's... mysterious," she began with a soft laugh. "You never quite know what's going on in his head, but that's completely okay because it only makes him that much more interesting. He's quiet, doesn't really like the loud crowds like most others do...."

"He's that kind of guy, huh?" said Specs, completely in the dark about who it could possibly be. "He a newsie? Must like you a lot if he's really quiet and doesn't like crowds. You two together now?"

"I think we are? Honestly, I'm not entirely sure," she shrugged. "To tell you the truth, I wish I knew. It would make things a whole lot easier for me, that's for sure!" She couldn't help but laugh at herself -- those were probably the most (and maybe only) honest words she had spoken since the conversation turned to significant others. "He's a newsie, yeah, but I think he's got a couple of side jobs, too."
