"She's fine." Eli told her, nodding. "It horrifies me that there are men in this city that could beat on a woman."

That made Trixie look down into her mug quickly. "Uh huh. It's terrible."

"Has anyone ever hit you, Sweets?" Eli asked, reminding himself not to completely lose it like last time when Zippy had confessed to him.

She held her mug, looking down into her tea, avoiding looking at him. "Sometimes, at MayBelle's...when the fellas we danced with drank a whole lot...sometimes they didn't really take 'no' too well...It was easier to just give 'em what they wanted..."

Eli felt like he would throw up, and he gulped, looking at her. "Please leave that life, Trixie."

She swallowed, glancing up at him. "I ain't had to do...that...since I started at Irvin' Hall." She set her mug on the nightstand, sighing. "Eli, I gotta make money. And ya know damn well sellin' papers ain't gonna cut it."

"I'll take care of you!" Eli insisted, taking her hands. "Or...maybe you can waitress. Somewhere like Tibby's where the men will leave you alone." His eyes were wild, pleading with her.

Trixie gave him a sad little smile, squeezing his hands. "Oh, Eli. I don't want ya to get saddled with me."

She sighed, looking down at her lap. "You either love me or you don't Eli. There shouldn't be deal makin' involved." She pushed her hair out of her face. "What else am I supposed to do? I can't waitress, I can't read or write, I'd be useless to them."

Eli sighed. "You're right." He hugged her. "Not about you being useless, but the deal makin' part." He kissed her, stroking her cheek. "I just want what's best for you. It kills me- it hurts so damn much, I can't stress that enough- to think anyone could possibly hurt you."

Trixie tilted her head up at him, sliding her arms around his waist. "The Hall's safe, Eli. Medda runs a tight ship, and no one's hurt me. It ain't like MayBelle's. And that...all that's in the past."
