Birdie turned to look back at Lenny and Finn as the carriage pulled away. "I hope he's all right. I really didn't mean to hurt him..."

Hawk frowned. "He'll be fine." he said to her, looking away. It would be easier if this girl would just stop talking.

As if in answer to Hawk's silent entreaty that she shut up, Birdie finally began to cry in earnest, with big fat tears rolling down her cheeks. In a gush of scared, nervous blubbering, she blurted with a sob, "I don't want to die! I haven't done any of the things I wanted to do before I died!"

"Hoff..." one of Hawk's boys began, giving him a desperate look. "She's just a little girl..."
Hawk glared at him. "You or her, Grizz."

Birdie continued to cry, huddled in the corner of the carriage and biting her lip to keep it from trembling. "It's stupid! He's not even going to give you whatever it is he promised you!" she told Hawk in a squeaky voice.

Hawk shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not. He won't kill you, dollface, so stop your crying."

Birdie wiped at her eyes with another sniffle and looked over at him with wide, wet eyes. "He won't?"

"Doubtful. If you owe him money he's gonna want you to pay him it," hawk pointed out, bored.

"But I don't owe him money," she said in a small voice. "My father did. And I don't have one dollar to give Priest, let alone fifty." Her bottom lip trembled again. "He just wants to make an example of me."

Hawk shrugged. "not our problem." the carriage pulled in front of the Rooster and Hawk escorted Birdie inside.

As the carriage door opened and revealed the Rooster, and Birdie was nudged down the steps onto the sidewalk, she widened her eyes and tried to yank out of Hawk's grasp.
"Please," she begged in a whisper, as one last effort. "Please, I'll do anything, but don't--"
She was cut off as Monday appeared in the doorway of the Rooster, smirking around his ever-present cigarette. "Baby Bird, we were wonderin' when you'd fly on home." He looked past Birdie at Hawk. "Boss wants t'thank ya personally."

"I'm sure he does," Hawk replied annoyed, going to the bar and ordering a drink.

"Suit yourself, then," Monday said blandly. While Hawk ordered his drink, he took Birdie from the two Brooklyn boys, grabbing her hard by her arm and directing her forward to the door.
"I hope ya didn't make too much trouble for our new friend here, Baby Bird," he told her as Straits and Baz opened the back door to let them through.

Hawk lazily followed, sighing loudly.

"Ah, Beatrice, darlin'!" Priest said as soon as Monday led the procession into the back room. "Bring her over here, Monday." Birdie glared at Priest as fiercely as she could manage with a bloody lip and teary eyes, while Monday hauled her over to Priest's sofa and half-shoved her down onto it beside his boss.
"And Mr. Hoffman, of course," Priest added when he spotted Hawk. "Please, have a seat."
