"I should be," she answered. "But I'm supposed to be keeping close to the lodging house, and my usual selling spot is about halfway to Harlem. So I thought I'd take a nap instead." Birdie glanced down at Rose's finger as a bookmark and bit her lip. "Sorry, I didn't really mean to interrupt you..."

"Well, you did," Rose said matter-of-factly, one shoulder lifting in a noncommittal shrug. "Doesn't really matter." And it didn't. Now that Rose was talking to a girl, she realized she had forgotten what it was like to have an actual girl friend.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" she asked suddenly.

Birdie blushed again, shaking her head. "No, I don't." She smiled at Rose and leaned forward, curious. "Do you have one?"

Rose nodded before letting out a small sigh. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."

Birdie looked a bit confused by Rose's sigh, but she grinned. "You do? What's he like?"

"Well," Rose began, one corner of her lips raising up into a slight smirk. "He's pretty arrogant. Way too protective. Extremely stubborn. But...he's mine." She looked at Birdie as if to say 'and I wouldn't have it any other way.'

"That sounds lovely," Birdie sighed with a smile. She tilted her head. "Is he a newsie, too?"

Rose nodded, a wild curl coming loose from behind her ear at the motion. She blew it away from her face, trying not to think about what she had to tell him later. "He lives here, that's why I'm even here. Because he's here. He's the really tall, kinda blonde, Southern guy. You've probably noticed him. Kinda hard not to..."

"Oh, the cute one!" Birdie exclaimed, remembering seeing a tall, blonde newsie around. She leaned over the footboard again eagerly. "How did you meet?"

"I work at Irving Hall. One night I was a bartender, and he was drinking away his sorrows," she recalled, suppressing a smile. Rose wasn't sure why she was talking so much to this girl she just met. It wasn't like her.

Birdie let out a little laugh. "I don't know why, but that seems very romantic. What happened next?"

"We just talked for a while. Then he convinced to go outside with him for a smoke break." Rose let out a chuckle here, shaking her head. "A smoke break that turned into a kissing break."

"Oh, that IS romantic," Birdie sighed. She bit her lip, wondering when she might be lucky enough to have anything like a "kissing break." She'd been so busy lately getting settled in at Duane Street, and then with the mess in Brooklyn, there hadn't been any time to spend even thinking about boys.

Rose decided to be nice today and not mention the fact that she had tried to push him away because of all her problems. And she'd even gone so far as to slap him across the face. This girl just looked too delighted by the story, and for some reason Rose didn't feel like bursting her little bubble.
"Yeah. I'm sure you'll find someone, though. Someone who really likes violins, probably."

Birdie burst into laughter, wrinkling her nose. "That's doubtful, but thanks for saying so, anyway." She gave Rose another smile. "So you work at Irving? Do you like it there?"
