"It's something to do," she replied as she brought her knees up to her chest, hugging them and resting her chin atop them. "Keeps me busy when I need it to."

Birdie moved to take a seat at the end of the bed, tilting her head to the side. "Why do you need it to keep you busy?" she asked, then hesitated and added, "If you don't mind my asking."

Rose shrugged, not meeting Birdie's gaze. "Oh, you know how life can be sometimes," she replied vaguely.

Birdie furrowed her brow, leaning back against the end of the bed and folding her hands in her lap. "I do," she said quietly. "And I know it can be lonely, having problems and not having anyone to talk to about them."

Rather than talk about her own problems (which she would eventually tell Tyler about, though she wasn't looking forward to it), Rose decided to turn the tables. "...Is there...anything you'd like to talk about? I don't really talk to many people, and I'm really good at keeping secrets."

Birdie paused, then laughed and shook her head. "Oh, no, I don't really have any secrets. Just money troubles, mostly." She bit her lip and looked over at Rose. "I was actually thinking of auditioning at the Irving for some extra money...but I get the feeling I'm not the sort of entertainment they'd be interested in."

"Well, there's no sense in not trying," Rose pointed out, brow furrowed. "If you don't get a job playing music, I'm sure I could get you another one. Like costuming or something backstage."

"That's true," Birdie conceded. "I could always give it a shot." She nodded her head in determination, then grinned over at Rose. "Because, honestly, I'm a pretty terrible newsgirl."

Birdie's statement caused a slight chuckle to bubble up in Rose's throat. "I think I would be, too. I don't particularly like to draw too much attention to myself."

"Me neither. And I'm kind of a pushover," Birdie confessed. "A little kid knocked me down in the park last week and made off with my whole stack of papers."

"Little bastard!" Rose replied, laughing. "Yeah, I'll definitely get you a job at the Hall. I've got a shift there in an hour or so. You can come with me if you want."

Birdie nodded, laughing too. "I'd really appreciate that, Rose. Thanks." She smiled broadly at her.

Rose leaned forward, a grave look on her face. "Just don't tell anyone," she whispered conspiratorially. "I don't want people thinking I can do them favors just like that."

Birdie widened her eyes and nodded, struggling to keep her expression serious. "I won't tell a soul," she whispered back. "If anyone asks, I'll say I had a mysterious benefactor."

Rose nodded solemnly, suppressing a smirk. "Good girl. Now go do something else so I can finish this chapter. Maximus is just about to seduce Arianna, and I have a feeling she's going to let him." She raised an eyebrow, leaning back against her headboard and opening her book.
"Come back in an hour."
