Though she was a little bit tipsy, Birdie wandered back to the lodging house from Irving Hall, fresh from a very successful job interview and a fun drink with Rose. Rose was lovely -- perhaps a bit abrasive around the edges, but she had a good sense of humor, and she didn't treat Birdie like an annoyance. She was glad Rose had somebody she liked as much as she seemed to like Moonshine -- the girl seemed very lonely.
But her conversation with Rose had made Birdie thoughtful, and the brief bit of liquor in her system made her head straight to the fire escape, to look out across Manhattan and think things out.

Jack had decided to seek refuge on the fire escape as well that night and watched Birdie climb up, swaying a bit as she did. He waited until she situated herself nicely and then said, "Hey Birdie."

Birdie looked up and spotted Jack, breaking into a beaming smile. "Hi, Jack," she said cheerfully. "What're you doing out here?"

"just getting some air. I do that sometimes," he said with a smile, "what brought you out here?"

"Thinking," she answered, pulling her knees up and hugging them. "Did your friends in Brooklyn get things worked out?"

"I'm waiting to see, so far nothing has happened yet but I'm sure they'll do something," he said.

She nodded and rested her cheek on her knee. "Thanks for helping me, Jack. It was very nice of you."

"I couldn't just let it go, Birdie. They'd end up trampling over all of us." Jack sighed, "this could get really bad ya know."

Birdie bit her lip and looked over at him. "It may not mean much, I'll help any way I can. Priest did a lot of bad things to my family, and if that Mr. Hoffman is his friend, he must be a dangerous person, too."

"yeah I ain't buying the fact that he's just the leader of the Brooklyn newsies and ain't looking for anything else," Jack said with a sigh.

She frowned, tilting her head. "But what would he want? I know that Priest is looking to move his business into Brooklyn soon, but what is Hoffman's goal?" She let out a sigh that matched Jack's and turned to squint out over the lights of the city.

"I got no idea. That's what I'm trying to figure put," Jack said with a heavy sigh. "I'm just worried about what they really wanted from you ya know?"

"My father owed Priest money," she told him. "A lot of money. But he knows I don't have anything..." Frowning, she leaned back against the wall. "I was hoping he'd forget about me, and I could be okay here."

Birdie smiled at that, biting on her lip. "Thanks, Jack." She hugged her knees tighter, feeling the alcohol tingling in her brain. "It's lovely, having friends. I didn't really have any before."
