Michael rolled his eyes, following Nick and the ladies down the cobblestone sidewalk. He sauntered in the tea room after them, looking around to see who was there. Nobody of interest. They were probably all at White's.
"Told you," Lillian muttered, raising an eyebrow. "No ladies allowed."

The quartet were led to a table by the window, and Nick pulled out Lillian's, then Bea's chair before taking a seat himself.
"See? This is much better than White's -- you can barely hear yourself think in that place," Nick said, trying to make the most of the rather dull atmosphere. Certainly, White's was more entertaining, and the luscious Madame Evangeline was always available for some company, but... Nick fumbled to think of a benefit to Greenwood's.
Bea took her seat and looked around a moment, then she smiled and turned to Lillian. "I forgot to tell you, Lillie. I finished The Castle of Wolfenbach. It was ever so horrid!"

Lillian's eyes widened. "Wasn't it just?! I absolutely devoured it in two days," she gasped, her hand fluttering to cover her heart.
Michael rolled his eyes, slouching in his chair and letting out a sigh of boredom.

Bea giggled and nodded her head eagerly. "I didn't sleep at all last night, I had to stay up and finish it!"
Nick pulled a face and glanced around for a waiter, lifting his hand to gesture one over. Perhaps he did owe Michael an evening at White's to make up for this.

As Lillian and Bea discussed their horrid novel, Michael couldn't help but notice how pretty Bea looked when she was so animated. Her smile was quite beautiful, and her eyes shone with excitement. He didn't realize he was staring.

As the waiter came around with their tea tray and cups, Bea caught Michael staring at her. She blinked at him, confused, and reached up to touch her cheek to make sure there wasn't a smudge on it or anything.
Nick, oblivious, turned to Lillian and sat back in his chair with a smirk. "Lillian, I do hope your parents don't know about your horrid novel obsession."

"And why should they care what I read?" Lillian replied, pouring some milk into her tea before stirring it daintily. She quirked a brow at him as she lifted her tea cup up to her lips, ever the elegant London lady.
Michael shook himself out of his daze, tearing his eyes away from Bea. That was awkward.

Nick smirked and turned instead to Bea. "Cousin, was it not in Castle of Wolfenbach that the main character's uncle murders his brother and then plots to ravage her?"
Bea cast one last bewildered frown at Michael, then looked over at Nick and Lillian. "Yes, isn't it ghastly?" she said in a gleeful squeal.

Michael sat up straighter as he actually paid attention to what Nick was saying. "Say, this happens in a novel you two have read?" he asked, sounding incredibly surprised but also suspicious.
"Yes, of course, Michael. And it's only a novel," Lillian pointed out, casting a sharp-eyed gaze on Nick.

"You truly think your parents would approve of such a novel?" Nick asked, feeling triumphant. "A novel full of murder, ravagings, and haunted houses?"
Bea furrowed her brow. "But it's so exciting, Nick! I shouldn't see why anyone should mind us reading things like that."

"Because girls shouldn't be reading novels in the first place! Unless they're books on how to behave properly in society," Michael said. He wasn't being serious of course, but Michael had an odd sense of humor. If one wasn't acquired to it, one would not think him funny.
"Oh, do shut up," Lillian replied, rolling her eyes but smirking all the same. "What, Nick? Do you think Bea and I will get ideas and go on murderous rampages?"

Bea giggled at that. "I have always wanted to be a highwayman," she said with a grin.
Nick shook his head and smiled, sitting back in his chair. "It hardly bothers me that you read them, Lillian. I was only wondering how you managed to sneak them past your parents."

Lillian cleared her throat. "As long as I please them in society, they hardly care what I read in the privacy of my own room."
Michael snorted. "She means if she can nab a waltz with a Duke at a ball. Didn't you dance with the Duke of Sheridan at Lady Danbury's ball?"

Bea widened her eyes and sat forward. "Did you really, Lillie? How thrilling!" She hadn't been able to go to Lady Danbury's party -- Mrs. Sims had had another of her spells that week and had required Bea's company.
Nick frowned at the memory of that ball. "And Sheridan was a moron, if I recall correctly." He lifted his eyebrows and looked up as their tea things were brought over at last.

"Well, he's one of London's most eligible bachelors, so it hardly matters if he was a moron or not." Lillian downed the rest of her tea before snatching a scone and nibbling on it.
Michael leaned toward Bea, lowering his voice a bit. "You didn't miss much, Bea. The ball wasn't all that. Food was awful."
