Nate needed to clear his head. He knew he needed to, but kept coming up with excuses to keep pushing everything in his head back until it came to this, a flask of whiskey in one hand and a betting card for the next horse race in the other. "Come on, Tequlia Sunrise... Bring it all home."
He leaned against the metal railing in front of him and took a quick swig from his flask. When did things get so complicated? First April, then Trixie, and then Rae! Rae was a sweet girl, this he couldn't deny, and he thought that Sean was the most adorable kid he had ever met, but did it really extend beyond that? Oh, to Hell if he knew. He looked down at his betting card and shoved it firmly into his pocket as he waited for the race to start.

((Hi! ;D))
Sammie figured she'd made enough money today. She was still surprised at how she didn't think of becoming a newsie earlier. It was so much better than pointing guns at people and running after people she didn't even know about just because they decided to threaten the Five Points gang. But it was all behind her now.
She'd bet on American Beauty mostly because of the horse's name. That, and she knew she wasn't going to win anything. She was never good at betting, anyway.

((hello hello!))
Nate picked his head back up, scanning the crowd for familiar faces. Why not at least strike up a conversation while he waited for this damn race to start? What were they waiting for, anyway? He looked to his right and noticed a blonde girl standing next to him.
"Hey..." he said to her, hoping that would get her attention. "Haven't I seen you somewhere else before?"

Sammie immediately stiffened. Did he know her from when she was working from Eastman? Did she rat out his friends? Did she torture someone he knew?
"U-uh, really? Where?" she said as casually as she could.

"I... I really don't know, that's the thing," Nate replied with a slight laugh. "I guess you just have one of those face." He shrugged and lifted his flask to his lips again. "The name's Nate."

Sammie secretly let out a relieved sigh. He was probably just mistaken.
"I'm Sammie. And, finally, someone without a nickname," she laughed softly before noticing his flask. "What're you drinkin' there?"

"Whiskey," Nate grinned, casually offering it to her. "You want some?"
He leaned back against the railing and laughed softly. "I never saw the point behind nicknames, to be honest. Even when I was a newsie, I didn't want one."

"Me neither," she smirked, taking his flask and taking a swig. "I don't see why we can't just use our real names."

"Exactly," he agreed, grinning at Sammie before taking the flask back. "That whole nickname thing is okay, I guess, if you're a kid. But once you reach a certain age, don't you wanna be taken seriously?" He paused, his shoulders shrugging. "Or maybe I'm the only one that thinks that."

"You're not the only one, don't worry," she chuckled, impatiently waiting for the race to start. "So, are you a newsie around here, then?"

"Me? Nah, not anymore," he replied with a laugh and a quick shake of his head. "A few years ago, yeah, but I've since moved up in the world." He shrugged and took another sip from his flask. "I work in a carpenter's shop on the Lower East Side now. No more newspapers for me." He glanced down at the starting gate, his head shaking slowly. "They don't know what they're doin' down there, do they?"

Sammie wrinkled her nose as she shook her head. "I don't think so either..." she muttered. "So, you didn't like being a newsie? Found something better for you?"

"Well, I had to... retire... for a while," Nate shrugged. Yeah, retire for a brief stint in the Refuge for a crime he didn't even commit. "When I got back, I decided it wasn't somethin' I wanted to do anymore. I knew I could do better."
"What about you?" he asked, turning his head to look at her again. "You been a newsie for long?"

Sammie cleared her throat nervously and shook her head. "No, just started. Who knows? I might even be good at it," she replied, refusing to talk about what she did previous to her now newsie life.

"Well, you got one thing goin' for you already, I can tell you that right now," Nate replied honestly. "People are more likely to buy from girls." He paused, laughing to himself. "The only way you could get a bigger advantage would be to find a baby to carry around with you."
