Sammie frowned, giving him a confused look. "So you're suggesting I go look for a baby?"

"No, no, no, they're too much of a hassle," Nate laughed. "I'm just saying you've already got an advantage over some of the other newsies out there." He shook his head slightly. "Sorry... It made more sense when I was thinking it."

"Uh huh..." muttered Sammie, raising an eyebrow at him. "I'm sure it did. 'Sides, I'm not going to flail around and lift up my skirt to sell a couple papers." Even though she'd done worse before. But hey, she was going for a clean slate.

"I wouldn't suggest that either," Nate said with a shake of his head. "Honestly, I really don't know why girls would go and do stuff like that to sell one lousy paper." He shrugged and leaned back against the railing. Finally, the horses were at the gates! "Looks like they're finally starting. About time."

Sammie simply nodded, watching the horses intently as they took off. She narrowed her eyes, staying quiet as she kept track of the horse she bet on.

Nate stepped up onto the bottom part of the railing as he watched the race anxiously. He didn't bet too much on his horse, but he had bet just enough that winning would immediately turn this day around. "Come on..." he said under his breath, cheering his horse on.

Sammie gripped the railing as she leaned forward to watch them, gasping once she saw American Beauty pull forward. "Go, go, go!" she shouted, much unlike herself.

"That your horse?" Nate asked, laughing as he watched Sammie suddenly seem to get excited. Tequila Sunrise raced around the bend, passing a couple more horses. "Go!! Come on, run!" He shouted, his excitement growing.

"Is that yours?" she laughed, noticing his excitement as one of them started moving towards the front.

"Tequila Sunrise? Yeah, she's mine," Nate answered with a grin. He saw what he thought was Sammie's horse pull out in front of his right as they came around the last bend. "Looks like yours is givin' me a run for its money!"

"As it should," she smirked at him, stepping onto the bottom railing to get a better view. There was only a couple yards between the horses and the finish line and Sammie was as nervous as ever.

"Go! Go!" Nate cheered, still excited despite the fact that it appeared Sammie's horse was about to win. At least second place still god some money, too... "Exciting, isn't it?" he asked.

"Are those in the horses in the front?" grinned Sammie, quite surprised by her luck. They were nearing the finish line, her horse pulling forward for the win. She gasped and cheered loudly, amazed at what just happened.

Nate laughed as he watch the girl's reaction. "You've never been horse racing before, have you?" he asked playfully. "Well, looks like you caught yourself a case of beginner's luck!" Hey, at least the pay rate for second place was still pretty good!
