She let out a deep breath and glanced at him. "He suspects me, Priest. I'm getting burned out from all this. Ain't there somthing else I can do for you?" She reached out and stroked his cheek. "Be at your beck and call? Move in, I can keep your place tidy. Cook for all the guys..."
It wasn't the greatest idea, but it would be better than trying to make conversation with closed lip men from Brooklyn.

The thought was appealing, of course, but Priest had known Piper long enough to know when she was trying to play the game with him. He put his hand over hers and pulled it away from his face with a lift of his eyebrows.
"I don't need a housekeeper, love. I need you to get me the information I'm asking for." He let go of her hand and sat back on the bench, folding his arms and giving her an icy smile. "If you can't do the job for me, I won't have much else use for you."

Her shaky breath got caught in her throat and she nodded obediently. "You won't just let me go, will you?" She looked down at her hands, shaking her head, her whole body feeling weak.

Priest's smile grew as he reached out and brushed a hand through her hair affectionately. "You're mine, honey, I thought you understood that by now." He took his hand back and got to his feet, buttoning his coat up against the wind. "So you'll get in with Connelly and find out more on this Spot Conlon boy, won't you, sweetheart?"

She glanced up at him, the wind making her eyes water. Or at least that was what she was telling herself. "They've got nothing on you, George. You are much too powerful for them even if they wanted to." But she nodded anyway, figuring she'd head back to her room at a boarding house. At least she got some alone time there. "What is Monday up to?"

"Organizing, you could say. He's brought some more boys in to help," Priest told her, turned so he could watch the boats drifting by on the water. "I suppose the two of you roam around Brooklyn enough, you'll run into each other." He glanced back at her.

"I told Jimmy Connelly that I am spending time with my ill grandmother. If I was to bring him back to my room at the boarding house, how shall I explain?" Piper asked him, worried that she'll be punished for her unclever explanations.

Priest simply lifted his brows at her, unimpressed. He put his hands in his pockets and turned to face her. "Come now, Piper. You can come up with something."

She looked down, ashamed for even bothering to ask him for help. "Will you be needing anything else from me?"

Looking her over, Priest let out a sigh and pulled a few coins out of his pocket, holding them out to her. "Here. Take the train back, and go see Monday. I'm sure he can dig you up a convincing-looking granny with a house that has thick walls." He smirked.

Piper looked him over for a minute. Either she was looking extra good today or he was feeling extra good. She reached over and took the money. "Thank you." Oh, she'll be seeing Monday all right.

"Next time I see you, I expect you'll have some actual information for me, sweetheart," he said with a lifted brow. "Don't let me down." With that, he turned, hands in his coat pockets, and walked off down the path.
