When George Priest wasn't being George Priest, his boys knew he'd be at Astoria Park, watching the boats on the water. They also knew not to bother him here, unless it was an emergency.
He only came out here on rare occasions -- being a loan shark, after all, was a full-time occupation. But every now and then, he would get up from his chair at the Rooster, put his hand up to silence his crew, and disappear out the side door of the bar.

Piper came up from behind Priest, standing next to him with her head held high.
"Hello George." She glanced at him. "You wanted to see me?"

Priest glanced over at her and smiled slowly. "Ah, Piper. How are you enjoying Brooklyn?"

She gave him an unamused look. "It's like being on vacation," she muttered sarcastically.

He let out a short laugh, then gestured her over to a bench nearby, taking a seat on it. "Have you found out anything interesting for me?"

piper took a seat next to him, on guard like usual. "plenty of beautiful promiscuous girls that might love to get paid to do what they love to do best." piper grumbled, tilting her head back and leading the breeze calm her.

"I'm glad to hear it." He stretched his arm along the back of the bench, then reached to push a piece of her hair behind her ear. "And what do you know about Jimmy Connelly?"

Piper cleared her throat, shifting uncomfortably. "He's a Brooklyn newsie. Under the leadership of a Spot Conlon."

"Spot Conlon," he repeated as he turned to look back over the water. "I'm hearing that name a lot these days. Did Connelly tell you anything about him?"

"Just that he keeps all his boys in line," she glanced at him. "They are newsies, George. A dumb street kids gang. Not a threat."

Priest let out a laugh. "Piper, come now, you should know better." He looked at her sidelong and smiled slowly. "We used to be a street kid gang, sweetheart."

Piper's stomach sank a bit, worried for her new acquaintance. "Jimmy's an honest guy. He didn't even sleep with me, and trust me, he got the gentleman's treatment."

"Not too honest, if Monday got a hold of him," Priest said with a flat edge to his voice. "Stick with him, see if he tells you anything else about this Conlon."

Piper gave Priest a hard look. "If he doesn't want to sleep with me I don't know what else I can do for you."

Priest matched her look, leaning toward her with a cold smile. "Then you'll just have to try harder, won't you?"
