Pie widened his eyes, stunned that she'd seen so much death. It really didn't compare to one lousy little brother who got into trouble every now and then. "Christ," he mumbled as he watched her. "So it was just you and your Gran?"

She tilted her head, "Had Granda too... he was this big man with a boomin' laugh, he liked to tease an' joke round.." Shrugging her shoulders Fae continued to tell. "We were happy awhile an' years went by while Granda made plans for us all to come to america. They said it was the land of dreams and oh the stories he an' Gran would weave about it.." Her smile was soft when she looked over at him. "Time came.. an' there was only enough money for two of us... so Granda stayed in Ireland an' sent Gran an me."

"Did he ever come over later on?" Pie asked, frowning. Staying behind while your wife and granddaughter sailed away across the sea -- he couldn't even imagine it.

She shook her head, looking over at him. "No. He never came after us, he's still in Ireland far as I know. That or he's gone. Gran died two years ago an' Granda can't write... he had to girls in town write letters for awhile but... now? I dunno. He might be gone."

"Is there someone else in your town to write to? I'm sure he's missing you." Pie watched her, something in his chest twisting painfully at the idea that Fae had no family left, no one to connect her with her life back in Ireland.

She shook her head, "I don't know. When I lost gran it was just me... I knew Granda might be gone. And the village-- I don't even know if anyone is still there. Everyone started comin' here or goin' ta England.."

Pie sighed, still frowning as he looked over at her. "What happened after your Gran passed away?"

"We lived in five points," she replied with a slight smile, she loved the Points for all it's drudgery there were people there that made it worth living in. Her eyes closed and she shrugged her shoulders, "Gran got sick... an' I... well when she died I couldn' keep the apartment. Couldn' afford it on newsies wages or tellin' stories or even if'n I'd gone to the textile mill, ya know? So I just-- came here instead. Been here ever since then.." Lost everything and yet still managed to be sweet and caring, and wise. She'd seen too much death to not be wise.

"It's not so bad here, though, is it?" he asked, giving her a little smile. "Sure, it's not your own place with your Gran, but everybody here is mostly nice, and it's a warm bed at the end of the night."

"And next time you're feeling homesick, you can come over to my family's house. Ma'll have you glad you're living in a lodging house in no time." Pie winked at her teasingly. Dinners at the Melas household were loud, chaotic, and headache-inducing, to say the least.

She chuckled, she barely remembered her own mother but her grandmother kept her alive in stories. Her father too-- she remembered little things. ".. it's not too sad. I remember things you know. Like.. Rosie used to run around an' sing.. anything that popped into her head. Just anything.. and.. Tommy? He'd put me on his shoulders-- he was least nine or so, I thought he was like a knight from a story book.." She didn't talk about her family, it hurt--- it ached but she didn't want to forget them.

"Ah, the burden of the big brother," Pie sighed with a grin over at her. "I used to do the same to my sister Anna, though she's not near so sweet as you."

"You think I'm sweet?" she asked tipping her head to look at him better. Sometimes the things he said, made her feel nice-- a soft fluttery feeling deep down. She'd never felt that before. The butterfly flutter.

"There's no thinkin' to it, Mol. You're sweet, though I don't know how, with all of us around you to corrupt you." He grinned at her broader.
