Jack whistled and then leaned back against the sink. "Damn..." He said and then lowered his head, that was a lot of money, that was more money than he could ever imagine having.

In spite of the tears pricking up at the corners of her eyes, Birdie let out a little laugh at the absurdity of the number. "Yeah," she agreed wearily. "I can't pay it back. I just have to stay out of Priest's way."

"Which should be possible since the son of a bitch is all the way in Queens..." Jack said aloud and then smirked at her. "Why's he moving further down? I wonder if Spot's gotten wind of this..." Jakc was basically thinking aloud. He went over to Birdie and gently wiped her tears. "I'll protect you." He told her.

Birdie looked up at him through her wet lashes, trying to stop crying, but his words finally tipped her over. She began to cry in earnest and leaned forward to put her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shirt. She knew it was foolish to act like this, and Jack certainly couldn't babysit her every minute of the day, but she felt so safe around him that she couldn't help herself.

Jack wrapped his arms around and held her close, he stroked her hair, "it'll be alright, I promise," he whispered to her.

"I thought they'd leave me alone at last," she cried miserably, holding onto him.

"those types never leave you alone," he said sadly as he rubbed her back, still keeping her close.

After a few moments of silence, Birdie sniffed and lifted her head, realizing that she'd just half-tackled poor Jack and then wept all over his shirt. "I'm sorry," she said with a sniffle as she brushed at the spot on his collar.

She gave a watery laugh and wiped her eyes, smiling at him. "You're always here when I need you, Jack. Thank you."

Jack smiled, "I try to be anyways," He shrugged and then leaned down to kiss her cheek tenderly. "Feel a little better?"

"Much better," she told him sincerely, looking up at him. She wanted very much to hug him again, but she felt a bit silly having cried all over him.

"Good, now let's get you a cup of tea or something, warm up your insides," He said with a smile and held out his hand to her.

Birdie took his hand and pulled herself up. "It's lucky I have a few pennies under my bed," she said out loud, thinking. "Maybe my boss will give me an advance for next week."

"I got some extra money saved up. I'll loan ya some," Jack said. He held her hand as they walked to the kitchen together.
