With all the good things happening in Birdie's life, the last thing she was expecting was a run-in with Priest's goons. It was stupid, really, she'd been coming home from picking up her pay at Irving Hall and hadn't been paying attention -- distracted, to tell the truth, by last night's walk home with Jack.
They'd been waiting for her at the opening of an alleyway. She hadn't even noticed. All she could do was run, all the way back to the lodging house, covered in scrapes and without any of her month's pay, and hide out in the blessedly-empty infirmary to wash off her wounds.

Jack was feeling like he was coming down with a cold or it could be that he was still hungover from the day before even though it was nearly nine pm, either way he needed something to make that foggy feeling in his head go away. He decided to see if there were any asprins left in the infirmary. He knew it was a long shot, but what did he have to loose?
When he heard running water he called out, "Hello?"

The sound of Jack's voice bouncing through the infirmary startled Birdie enough that her already-shaking hands dropped the bottle of iodine she was administering to her scraped elbow, causing it to clatter loudly into the sink and spill everywhere.
"In here," she called out in a wavering voice as she tried to clean up the mess of iodine off the sink.

Jack walked into the bathroom and took one look at her and then hurried over. "jesus...what happened? Are you okay?" He took her face gently into his hand and turned it to the light. "Who did this?"

Birdie winced as he turned her face. "I'm all right. Just a little shaken up, that's all," she tried to smile up at him, in spite of the dirt and scratches on her face.

"No you're not," He said. He frowned deeply. "Sit down," He commanded her and then went to get some first aid supplies so he could clean her wounds. "Who did this?"

Obediently, Birdie took a seat on one of the chairs near the sink. "Priest's boys. Straits and Acer." She tilted her chin up, trying not to tear up. "I wasn't paying attention... I should have seen them."

"You wouldn't have been able to fight them off anyway," Jack said with a sigh. The whole thing was a giant mess. He tenderly started to wash the dirt from her face.

She made a pained noise as he cleaned a scrape on her cheek. "I could have avoided them if I'd been watching..." She let out a sigh and chewed at her lip. "They took all my pay from the Hall. It was lucky I didn't have my violin with me..."

Jack sighed heavily, "I don't wantcha leaving there at night on your own no more. I'll walk ya home from now on," he said. He had to make sure she was alright. He couldn't let anything happen to her.
((OMG i am going to sound like the worst rper ever, but did they talk about priest or was that somewhere else?))

((haha, no, you aren't! they talked about priest when the whole hawk hoffman thing was going on, but since that was scrapped, i guess maybe they just talked about why birdie was all beaten up. )) Birdie frowned up at him. "Jack, I couldn't ask you to do that. I'll just be more careful."

"you didn't ask. I said I would do it and I'm gonna. This was just a preview of what they could do," he sighed heavily and looked into her eyes.

"I know," she answered quietly, lowering her gaze. The next time Priest got a hold of her, he wouldn't make the same mistake as last time -- there wouldn't be a chance for her to escape.

"How much money do ya owe them?" He asked her. He needed to know and he really did need to know everything. This wasn't a joke. They could kill her. He took her hand in his, "Birdie, you gotta tell me everything so I can keep you safe."

"Four thousand, at least. Minus the thirty dollars they took off me today," she answered in a shaky voice. Her eyes tarted to well up. "But it doesn't matter. He keeps raising the amount."
