Mikey didn't really understand, and instead began telling Tristan all about his own girlfriend, Kelly, in his preschool and daycare class.

Which of course made Tristan laugh, "Jeez you're starting young!" He exclaimed. Tristan glanced at Erin and smiled at her. "And don't pull on her hair."

Mikey nodded, and then accidentally spilled his milk. He started to cry, and Erin rolled her eyes. "Stop mike it's okay!"

"Hey, whoa...calm down. It's just milk," Tristan would have hugged him and brushed his tears away but didn't know what Erin would do if he did. Instead he got up and grabbed a towel to wipe up the spill.

"I'm sorry, he is very sensitive. He gets upset extremely easy," Erin said, going over to him and picked him up. He sobbed into her shoulder and Erin held him close, sitting in his seat.
"Has to do with the instability in his early life. Trauma and lack of attachment." she rubbed Mikey's back. "It's okay, look, Tristan cleaned it all up. It's gone! Clean!"

Tristan moped up the mess and nodded. "Nobody held him when he was a baby?" Damn it. God damn it. He felt guilty, angry...everything boiled into one.

"Not as much as they should have. Or in a very loving way," Erin said, kidding the top of Mikey's head. "then he came to me and I held you all the time, didn't I Mikey?" Mikey nodded, now sucking on his thumb, snuggling into her closer.
"How about that ice cream?"

"It's your favorite," Tristan said and smiled. "Then I have a present for you. You and Erin can go through it together after I leave alright?" He said.

Mikey nodded, still sniffling. Erin stood up and placed Mikey back in his chair and went to go help with ice cream.
"It's why I need to find him a family. And fast." she looked at him. "I'll send a coworker with Mikey on your next visit. It's...not going to be as easy for you to bond with him if I'm there. Plus I'm way too biased to make any quality observations."

Tristan glanced at Mikey and then at Erin, "No...you don't need to find him a family, Erin. You are his family." He said. Tristan sighed heavily. "I should go..."

"No." she grabbed his wrist and handed him a small bowl of ice cream. "Sit with him first. I'm not his family, you are."

"Erin you're just as attached as he is. You've raised him. He's yours," Tristan said, he sat down anyway, setting the bowl of ice cream down on the table.

She didn't want to fight about this in front of Mikey, so she didn't say anything as they ate ice cream. She had Tristan wait as she got Mikey ready for bed.
Once Mikey was sleeping, Erin took a seat next to Tristan at the table. "Let me clarify. My relationship with mike is important, but it had always been temporary. I'm foster care, I don't intend on keeping him. I never did and never will."

Tristan crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair, "And you're worried about his welfare? You know how much that is going to fuck him up? You're the only one who has been constant in his life. He don't wanna leave here. This is home." Tristan sighed heavily and then squeezed the bridge of his nose.
"Look. I ain't gonna disappear and I want my kid. I wanna hear him one day call me dad. I know I can't rush it or nothing, but the fact is he is extremely attached to you. He loves you. You can't just leave his life."

She gave him a hard look. "It is not your place to tell me what I can and cannot do. Either you agree to more supervised visits, Mr. Shamien, or there is nothing else I can do for you."
She couldn't believe he was talking like this to her, telling her what to do.
