Monday watched Jimmy leave, then shut the door behind him firmly. "Jesus," he muttered, gritting his teeth. He flipped the lock again and turned back to Piper, glaring at her across the room. "That was a disaster."

"I'm sorry," she told him sincerely. "I fucked up." she gave him a sad look.

"We both fucked up," he answered as he picked up his pack of cigarettes and immediately lit one. "Doesn't matter now, we need to fix it."

"Off him?" piper joked, although none of this was a joking matter. She sat down next to him and reached for a cigarette.

Monday passed her the pack and sank back into the couch, frowning hard. "Tempting. He played that pretty damn good." Shaking his head, he took a long draw from the cigarette. "He's just a newsie, though, right? He can't need much from us."

Piper shrugged, lighting the cigarette "they're smart. He was on me from the beginning. He wouldn't touch me, wouldn't tell me anything except that his newsie gang is pretty influential in these parts."

"And I thought Boss was bein' paranoid," he muttered, then ran a hand through his hair with a sigh. "He'll call on us for some kind of favor. I just hope it's something you and I can pull off without involving anyone else."

"Don't....don't worry about this. I'll handle it. He'll kill you if he found out. George will beat me but he wont kill me." piper said, giving him a sad look.
"you are better off pretending none of this happened."

"No offense, Piper, but I don't think you can fuck your way out of this -- he's really worried about this Spot Conlon kid, and we've basically just handed ourselves over on a platter." Monday grimaced. "I think we're gonna have to partner up if we're gonna make it out of this alive."
And Monday did not do well with partners.

Piper winced when he said that, and stood up, taking a drag of the cigarette. "Whatever you wanna do, Monday. You know where to find me."

Monday nodded and got up, too, stubbing out his cigarette. "If you get any bright ideas, let me hear 'em. Because right now, I've got nothin'."

Piper cleared her throat. "Why aren't you ratting me out to priest? Why are you helping me?"

He hesitated. Why was he helping her? Logically, he should just throw her to the wolves so Priest wouldn't go after him, but the idea made him sick to his stomach.
And what was with all his worry that Connelly was a good guy? Maybe he was coming down with something -- the old Monday wouldn't have given a shit about either of them.
"He likes you better," he finally said, clearing his throat. "I try to say somethin' bad about you, he'll probably have me soaked."

"That's a pretty lame excuse but I'll take it," Piper said, grabbing her bag. She wanted out from all of this and had a strange urge to tell him that. But she also knew that he was the worst person to tell that to.
He may be hesitating now but the minute she decided to bail, she'd be on the run.

Monday pulled the door open for her with a frown. "Just... lay low for a while. Try to act normal around Priest, and I'll do the same."
