Birdie had promised Jack not to leave the lodging house -- at least for today -- so she perched herself on the steps, watching some of the younger boys playing marbles on the sidewalk.
She'd cleaned up her bunk, even tidied the kitchen as best she could, and tried to practice her violin though her arm was hurting, and now she was bored.

Jack opened the front door to the lodging house and marched himself inside. He was looking forward to the lengthy afternoon and couldn't wait for it to start. "Hey!" He said with a smile.

Birdie looked up as Jack came in, lighting up with a bright smile. "Hi!" she chirped back happily. It was silly how much better she felt when she saw him. "Papers sell well?"

"yep they're all Gone for the day!" he said happily and then sat down beside her. "was thinking I'd just rest here a bit before the game starts."

She grinned over at him, wrapping her arms around her knees. "You look really excited, Jack," she told him with a laugh.

"I am! I love baseball!" he said with a laugh and poked her side.

Birdie squeaked and twisted away from his finger. She crinkled her nose at him. "I've never played it before, only watched it."

"Then you gotta play!" He said with a huge smile. "Oh it'll be so much fun! Running round the bases, hitting the ball, you'll love it!"

"I don't think you lot would be gentle enough teachers," she teased, then shrugged. "Anyway, my arm is still a bit sore. I'm going to come watch, though."

"You better be cheering for me on the sidelines," He sat up, puffing out his chest.

Birdie smiled and folded her hands on her knees. "I'll be cheering for everyone," she answered, then leaned in and dropped her voice to a whisper, teasing. "But secretly I'll cheer louder for you."

Jack grinned and then kissed her soundly, "I was hoping you'd say that."

She giggled as he kissed her, turning red. "I shouldn't, it's not fair to everybody else," she said, trying to sound prim as she giggled again.

"It's fine, you're my girl. All your cheers should be just for me," He cupped her cheek in his hand.

"I'm your girl?" she asked with a smile. That sounded nice -- Jack's girl.
