Peeking her head through the doorway, Ershey scanned the rooftop to check if anyone was near. She needed to count her "savings" and didn't want any nosy eyes to see what she was up to. Seeing that it was clear, she took a seat near the fire escape (just in case she needed to make an exit) and pulled out her makeshift wallet and began counting how much she had saved up so far. Missing Ericson's payment was a pain (almost literally) and Ershey wanted to make sure she had everything ready. She didn't want any trouble, especially now when things were slowly starting to look up for her.

((hoping this was for me, haha))
Goblin wriggled through the window and landed lightly on his feet on the roof. He was feeling rather tired. After a little talk with his sister, he'd been dutifully searching the lodging house and scouting the neighborhood for a certain girl, and he was very much hoping he'd found her.
Being Wraith's brother, however, the first thing he said was, "Hi. Don't run away, all right?" The second thing he said was, "Are you Ershey, by any chance?"

((yes, it is!))
Ershey stared at the boy, her hands already putting her money away in her pocket, feet ready to run. "Yeah, why?" she asked suspiciously.

"I'm Goblin," he said, sitting down with enough distance between them that she probably wouldn't panic and flee. "Clara's...uh, Wraith's brother. She asked me to talk to you. Said you two were getting to be friends, but she wanted my opinion on you first. You might've noticed, she's pretty much scared of everyone." There was some kind of odd inflection when he said that--bitterness, or maybe even guilt--but he smiled reassuringly.
((Alas, I must sleep! But I shall return tomorrow!))

((Night, love! ) "Yeah, I noticed that," said Ershey, recalling Wraith's habit of slipping in and out of the shadows. Ershey kept close to the fire escape, still unsure of what he would want from her. Wraith couldn't possibly have sent her brother just to talk to her, could she? After finding about Ericson, Ershey kept her guard around Wraith. "Opinion of me? What, she needs your approval first or somethin'? What do you want?"

Goblin snorted. "Trust me, it's been a long time since she needed my approval of anything." He wasn't about to tell her that he was already doing exactly what Clara had asked him to, that he'd been doing it since the moment he found her here--looking her over, watching her expressions and mannerisms, taking in all the information he could.
He hesitated, wondering exactly what he should tell her, and finally settled on part of the truth. "She thinks I've got some kinda magic skill at reading people, seeing if they're trustworthy or something." He shrugged as if this were total folly on the part of his eccentric sister. "Paranoid, right? But I gotta look out for her. So how'd you two meet, anyway? She ain't exactly a social butterfly."

Ershey bit her lip, still quite unsure of what to do about Goblin. She couldn't very well tell him everything, now could she? One thing was for sure, Wraith kept her mouth shut about what she saw. Goblin wouldn't be asking her how they met if she didn't spill everything.
"She followed me," answered Ershey after a couple of moments. "All the way to the Bronx." She wondered if Goblin knew about Ericson and whether if this was enough information for him to put together.

"Followed you? Really? That ain't like her. She's usually running away from people." His voice sounded surprised, and slightly concerned about his wayward sister. He knew it did, because he was making it sound that way. "Sounds like she owes you an apology, then. I wonder why she'd do something like that?"

To tell or not to tell? Her behind was on the line and Ershey still didn't know if she could trust these two kids.
"I ran into her when the bulls were chasin' me," she explained, trying to hide that she was somewhat worried. "I stole somethin' and didn't see her when she was sellin' her papes. She helped me hide from them for a bit but I had... an errand to do right after. So, I went. I didn't think she would follow me. All the way to the Bronx."
She paused, suddenly realizing something. "You're Wraith's brother? Are you sure she told you everything?" If Goblin was so confused about the whole thing, that means he had no idea about Ericson at all. He knew just as little than anyone in this house did.

"I'm never sure," he said, quite truthfully and rather ruefully. "But I do know she don't care for police." He watched Ershey's face very carefully, while appearing to be watching the smoke billowing up from a nearby factory.

"She wouldn't have followed me if she didn't care for police," countered Ershey quickly. He had no idea what was going on with his sister and she sent him here to check her out. Oh, poor guy.

"Well, I'm guessing you don't care for 'em much either, if you're in the pickpocket trade," he said with a smile. "I used to do some of that myself. Got thrown in the Refuge for a while, actually, and it wasn't even a fair charge. Makes you hold a grudge, y'know?"
Well, that was a very smooth transition. It sounded admirably like idle conversation. It also contained a bit of a personal confidence, which Goblin hated. Clara should really start paying him for this.

Ershey arched an eyebrow at the boy. He was sneaky. "Yeah, well, that just means that you don't run fast enough," she said, shrugging. "Or don't know your way around enough. That's the only way you beat 'em."

"Sometimes it's not about outrunning them," Goblin pointed out. "Sometimes it's about outsmarting them. Clara's fast, but she's not always smart."
The girl knew they were playing games now, but that was okay. He was apt to change the rules every couple minutes anyway. He could never focus on a task for long without abruptly deciding that it might be fun to do it some other way. It kept him from getting bored, and every new angle offered him new information.

"Clara?" repeated Ershey, confused. "Is that your sister's name?"
It was odd for Ershey to hear the newsies' actual names. It helped having a nickname, she thought. It was easier to hide that way.
