"No, I'm not. But if I told you anymore you'd resent me," Sapphy said simply.

"You might be surprised. Takes a hell of a lot to make me resent a friend," he said, thinking of some of the things his friends had done. "And if you don't tell me, I'll just keep worrying, and even being mad would be better than that. For me, anyway."

"Fine," Sapphy said, voice dangerously soft. "I've been fucking around in Brooklyn. Literally. Fucking. Trying to feel something other than dead inside... How's that strike ya?" she asked, a little cruelly as she flicked her eyes up to meet Race's.

Race's stomach did strange and horrible things. He drew in a sharp breath, let it out, looked away, looked back at her, and squeezed the fork in a crushing grip while he forced himself to actually think about this. "Kind of hard," he finally said in a surprisingly gentle voice, when he trusted himself to speak. "But I don't think it's working, 'cause you still feel dead inside, so mostly I'm still worried."

"You need to stop thinking about me like that Race," she said rather plainly, breaking through that wall the two constructed between each other. "I'm only going to crush you."

He cocked his head at her, genuinely confused. "Does the fact that I have feelings for you make it less valid that I'm worried? I know you don't feel the same way, Sapphy. It's not gonna destroy my life. But if something's destroying yours, I want to at least know. And I'd same the same damn thing to Raven or or Mush or anyone else I care about."

Sapphy didn't know how to respond to that. She certainly wasn't expecting it. She took a drink of water, adverting her eyes.
Her heart ached and she wasn't sure why.

He took his cue from her and sipped his water, just looking at her. Something had broken between them, like a wave that finally came crashing down, but he wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing.
"I don't know why you thought I'd resent you," he said at last. "You didn't do anything to me. Just tell me if I can do anything to help." It was true; he wasn't mad at Sapphy. It hurt like hell, yes, but that was his problem, not hers.

You know why I thought you'd resent me.
"I wish I knew," she voice aloud.

"Well, if you think of anything..." He shrugged. "I'll be here."
Part of him wished he were mad. Part of him wanted to yell, say something scathing, and storm out of the restaurant, instead of once again being the sweet, patient friend who sat there and offered to help any way he could. Maybe someday he would get tired of them all, and their sorrows and rages, and the dangers they put themselves in.
And then when he was sad or angry or in danger, he'd turn around and find that they were tired of him.
No, he still cared, all right. He was just tired enough to wish he didn't.

She knew that look. Everyone got it around her sooner or later, hell, even her parents -- she didn't blame any of them, of course. Only Kevin understood.
"I'm too much work, I know," she apologized.

He shook his head. "It's not just you. Seems like it's everything lately. Really, on a good day, I'd still be smiling right now."
Sophia came and went, leaving the bill--sometimes even she knew when to be discreet. "I'm guessing you won't let me pay for you," Race said with a slight smile, "even though I just came into a windfall."

Sapphy let out a shaky breath, looking to the side. She started to turn pink.
"If you could manage it, I'd actually really appreciate it....." she was behind in paying off her debt.

"I can manage it," he said simply. Letting him do something for her was actually the kindest thing she could do right now. He paid the bill, left a generous tip, and headed out into the night air with Sapphy, breathing it in gratefully.
((To bed with me!))

((NO. You stay up and play with me! *pout* ))
Sapphy joined him. She felt so tired as they made it outside. She looked at Racetrack and smiled.
"Question one: What would you like to do right now? No price limited."
