It had been raining all day.
In fact, Zippy was pretty convinced that something greater than them was attempting to wipe out all the filth in NYC and start anew. People everywhere were soaked, and Zippy herself barely made a dime that day. You would think that despite the rain, people would still want their news. But in the storms and the misty atmosphere, nobody wanted to be outside.
Having had to skip lunch today because she couldn't afford it (and dinner in the house barely filled her up even when she did have lunch) Zippy was starving and pretty miserable. But when she finally noticed the storms had turned to a light drizzle, she escaped from the stench of the girls' bunkroom and headed for the roof. Zippy absolutely loved the fresh smell of the air after it rained, and she felt her misery begin to diminish as she took in the deep breaths.

Sapphy was already up on the roof, lying on her back and looking at the sky. She was drenched -- she'd been up there already for a long while, enjoying the rain. Her hair, all strewn about around her head, had turned almost brown because of all the heavy water it soaked in.
She registered the presence of someone else, but didn't say anything. She blinked up at the sky, her eyelashes wet on her already moist cheeks.

Even though Zippy didn't originally see anybody on the roof, when she noticed a girl laying there, body drenched and laying motionless, she panicked.
"Omigosh!" Zip gasped, rushing over to the body and getting down on her knees, "are you okay?!"

Sapphy, shocked by such a reaction, started laughing.
"I'm sorry-- I'm sorry. Yes, yes. I'm more than okay."

Zippy quickly got up and took a few steps back, eyeing the other girl closely.
"Whatcha doing out here in the storm?" Zippy crossed her arms over her chest, watching the other girl closely, running her eyes up and down her soaking wet clothes and hair.

"I just love the rain," Sapphy said simply, rubbing her wet fingers together. "'s nice." She smiled up at Zippy, her demeanor faltered at that look she was being given.

"But...you are soaking wet!" Zippy exclaimed, furrowing her eyebrows at her. Zippy hated being too cold, or too warm, or anything less than the perfect temperature. And this girl was soaking wet and probably freezing.

"My blood just runs hot I guess," Sapphy shrugged, feeling awkward already. Everyone thought she was an idiot, didn't they?

Zippy noticed the girl's saddened look. She didn't mean to hurt her feelings. "Hey, I didn't mean to upset you. I was just surprised, that's all. I'm Zippy."

"You didn't," Sapphy said with a bright smile that got her out of any little lie. "I'm Sapphy. Nice to meet you, Zippy. Sorry I scared you."

"It's fine. Aren't...aren't you cold?" Zippy inquired, leaning against the railing and noticing the sky was clearing up.

"No," Sapphy smiled. She turned to Zippy. "Where are you from? Someplace warm?"

"No, I wish! I'm from here, the Lower East Side. Have never been anywhere else in my life, unless you count Brooklyn. What about you? Where are you from?" Zippy pondered if she should start considering leaving New York. She really had nothing here that she was sticking around for, except Eli. She kept hoping she was run into him. She missed her brother so much, sometimes it hurt.

"I'm from here too. So I guess we're Manhattan sisters..." She sat up, looking at Zippy. "And it sounds like you and I have similar travel experiences."

"I guess so. Have you ever read about Niagara Falls in Canada? I would like to visit it, but someone like you who loves rain would absolutely LOVE it," Zippy offered, thinking about what it must look like. She had read about the giant waterfall in one of the newspapers.
