As the game came to a close and the pot became bigger and bigger only one more boy bowed out. Fish was still in the game. Raven glared at him and waited as he set down his cards. She couldn't help herself, she started smirking and laid out her royal flush with a flourish.
"Read 'em and weep boys!" She was positively giddy.

Fish's eyes bulged out, and he gaped at her just like his namesake. "You cheated!"
"Nope, she didn't," Race said.
"She had to! No one ever gets a royal flush! It just don't happen!"
"It happened," said Race, snickering furiously now. "C'mon, it was so obvious she wasn't bluffing." He grinned at Raven. Fish looked utterly dismayed. The other boys were all staring at either Raven or her cards, miserably waiting for her to rake in her winnings.

"Honestly I didn't cheat." SHe glanced at them all and then started scooping up the money, she couldn't help but smile. She had to win at least five dollars. It was so much money!
"Would I be stupid enough to cheat? I just got here." She said, narrowing her eyes as she stood up from the table, shoving money in her pockets.

"Why don't you go jump in the river and cool off," Race suggested.
Fish glared at him and then stormed out of the bunkroom, because Race had lived here for like seven years and known Spot Conlon before he was even Spot Conlon, so no one really messed with him.
Race stood up and beamed at Raven as the other guys grumbled and went their separate ways. "You, me, all the wolf traps in the city--we're gonna be rich."

Rven spit in her hand and shook with Race. "Deal," she beamed at him. "I guess I'm just a lucky girl."

"About that." Race eyed her thoughtfully. "You sure you don't know any tricks?" He hadn't seen her cheat, and he could catch anyone cheating, but...a royal flush in your very first game? Race could actually calculate the exact odds of that, and they were ridiculous.

"Nope, it just happened and I was actually allowed to do much of anything in the Bronx so," she shrugged, "it was beginners luck."

"In that case, congratulations!" Race said with a grin. "Gotta say I'm jealous, I ain't had a hand like that in all my years of gambling. Or not in an honest game, anyway," he added a bit cagily, and then lowered his voice. "So, you still planning on pulling this crazy stunt?" He nodded toward the relevant floorboard.

"Course I am, I wanna see what it looks like." She whispered back to him.

Race nodded, knowing he couldn't talk her out of it now. And not even really wanting to. It was going to be hilarious, one way or another. "Well, in that case, I guess you better have a lookout."

Raven smiled widely, "I knew I could count on you. You know, Brooklyn ain't really so bad." She replied with a nod.

"Not once you're used to it," Race agreed. Not that he'd ever had to get used to it; he'd never lived anywhere else. "Well, I got a couple bets to settle down by the docks, but...I'll see you tonight?" Several heads turned at that question, as several jealous newsboys wondered how Racetrack had gotten the pretty new girl to agree to "see him tonight."

Raven saw their faces and decided to play into. For some reason she suspected Racetrack was always the one lacking in the romance department. She let her hand drift down his arm and batted her eyes. "Tonight...don't leave me waiting, I will be so disappointed." She purred at him.

Race bit down on his lip and managed not to laugh with a great effort. He knew perfectly well she was into Spot--what new girl wasn't?--but he could already see this becoming an ongoing inside joke between them. Somehow, he had a premonition that this was going to be a lasting friendship.
"I'll hurry back," he promised, kissing her hand solemnly and heading out the door.
((Skip to tonight and Operation Teddy Bear? ^_^))

((YES))
After lights out and all the boys were snoring, asleep in their beds, Raven waited in the dark out in the hall. She was as silent as a mouse. Where was Racetrack? She needed her accomplice.
