"I know how you feel," Tara said. "When we were children, Clara and Sebastian--uh, Wraith and Goblin always came to me with their problems. I never had problems. At least, mine weren't as bad. So I was the problem-solver." She shrugged. "You just have to fake it, I think. Say anything that sounds comforting or wise until the right thing comes out of your mouth and gives them an idea."
She scanned a few more headlines. "Oh, my father donated some money to the Children's Aid Society. I didn't even know that." She shouted it out and managed to sell a couple more papers.

"Yeah? That means he helps keep our Lodging House open. If it wasn't for him we'd all be sleeping in alleys," Jack said and then shrugged. "Some of the guys end up there anyways."

"My dad's not a bad man," Tara admitted. "He's just...a businessman, you know?" She glanced at him. "I mean, rumor has it you've met Joseph Pulitzer himself. So imagine a man who's just as obsessive, only with a fancy tobacco company instead of a newspaper."
She shuddered a little when he mentioned sleeping in alleys. She knew now that Goblin and Wraith had spent four years on and off the streets, and she honestly didn't know how they were both still alive. Though from what she'd seen of them recently, "alive and well" would be a bit of a stretch.

"Ah I see. So he doesn't know what else to do with his money so he helps poor kids." Jack smirked at her, "Pulitzer's an asshole."

"Yeah? Is it true he has really sensitive hearing, and his eyesight's so bad he has to use spectacles and a magnifying glass just to read his own papers?" Tara did like a bit of juicy gossip now and then. "It was so exciting when you folks went on strike and brought him to his knees. Father railed about it every morning because he couldn't get his paper, but I was rooting for you the whole time." She was, too. She'd briefly taken to wearing a newsie hat and helping a half-crazy neighbor pass out socialist pamphlets.

Jack started to laugh, "Yeah it is true actually, he hates loud noises and can't see nothing. Uh, thanks." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "We had to do something ya know?"

"Can't just let someone walk all over you," Tara agreed. She of all people was familiar with that concept. She stopped chatting for a while and hawked some headlines, figuring Jack would be impressed if she sold all her papers--plus, she wanted to lighten the load. "Mayor seen leaving vaudeville star's dressing room! Wife declines to comment!" Kathryn would kill her for that one, but hey, anything to win the respect of an attractive man.
Or woman.
Like the blond in a tight skirt who had just bought a paper from her and was now walking away, revealing the most exquisite butt Tara had ever seen. She stared after it in a state of rapture and promptly slipped on a broken bottle and went sprawling onto the ground, papers and all.

"Whoa!" Jack exclaimed, he had also been staring at the perfect ass walking by him when he saw all the papers fly up into the air. He saw Tara down on the floor.
"Jesus, are you okay?" he asked her, immediately reaching down to help her up.
((hehe))

"Yes! Fine! Damn bottle, what was it doing in the middle of the sidewalk?" Tara babbled, accepting his hand and getting to her feet, cheeks flaming. She remembered her papers and gathered them back into her arms, casting about frantically for something to say. "Uh, so, I...I saw you watching that girl! Is there some newsgirl who should know about this?" she scolded, and paused. "Or are you a free agent?"

"Free agent," Jack said warily raising an eyebrow, "you know you were staring too..." he remarked and crossed his arms. "You can't sell those ya know, they got mud on 'em." He said.

"Anyone would've! She was a very..." Tara coughed. "...shapely young woman." She glanced dismally at her dirty newspapers. "Well, I figured this wasn't exactly my calling. Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to have lunch with you."

Jack started laughing, "Really? Well why didn't you just say, hey Jack let's have lunch? Come on," He grabbed her hand and started walking with her to Tibby's.

"That would not have been dramatic enough," she said with a wry smile. In Tara's world, life always had to be dramatic. She beamed when he took her hand and walked beside him, leaving her ruined papers on the ground. "Where are we going?"

"Just to Tibby's...nothing fancy, that way we don't have to worry about our manners while we have some lunch. I'm in the mood for a hot dog anyways." He said with a shrug and a smile.

"I never worry about manners," Tara said with a careless laugh. "At the last fancy supper my mother held, I started a food fight. Well, it was really my sister Irene who started it--she gave me this look when I sat down, like she just knew I was bound to do something embarrassing, and I couldn't disappoint her, could I?" The gleam in Tara's eye was reminiscent of her childhood friends, Goblin and Wraith, and suggested for a moment that she was capable of even greater evil than ruining her sister's dress.
