"Now I know never to look at you the wrong way," Jack said with a laugh, "Your mother must have been upset that you ruined the linens." "

"She was hysterical. She had a fainting spell." Tara rolled her eyes. "No one can possibly have as many fainting spells as that woman does. Sometimes I think she does it just to get my father's attention. Not that I blame her--getting my father's attention isn't easy."

"So do you act the way you do to get your father's attention?" Jack asked her completely serious as they approached Tibby's.

Tara give him a look, but thought about it. "Maybe it started out that way. He wanted a boy, you know. The best I could give him was a tomboy. He thought it was sweet when I was little, but as I got older, he just wanted me to turn into a proper young lady like my sisters. And it was too late for that. I was already wild and crazy." She smirked as they entered the restaurant. "Now it's just who I am."

"That explains a lot...once you make something you can't really undo it." Jack said with a shrug and sat down at one of the tables by the window.

She nodded and sat across from him. "So you can never not be a fearless leader who thinks he's a cowboy?" she teased. She scanned the menu and wondered what knockwurst was.

"Nope, not until I actually stop leading the newsies and go to Santa Fe." Jack smiled at her.

"That new town out west? Sounds like a good time!" Tara said approvingly. "I always wanted to ride horses and have adventures. I guess there's no such thing as a cowgirl, is there?"

"That's dedication," said Tara, impressed. "Won't you miss everyone, though? The other newsies, I mean?" A waiter approached, and Tara ordered knockwurst and sarsaparilla. Only one way to find out, right?

"A hot dog and a root beer," Jack said to the waiter and then looked at Tara," Well yeah, they're like my family ya know? But it's always been my dream and I stayed once for a girl. I just ain't ready to leave yet."

"Was she worth it? The girl?" Tara asked nonchalantly.

"No, she turned out not to be." Jack said with a sigh and then chewed on his bottom lip. "So what's this fiance of yours life?"

Tara made the kind of face you might make if something absolutely disgusting came crawling out from between your sheets. "Like a cockroach."

"That...isn't good." He said. "I'm sorry...I mean if he was at least nice..." Jack shrugged.
