Tree frowned. There was something unnerving about this Goblin fellow and his knowing smiles. He certainly warranted more observation, if only to figure out how he seemed to read her like an open book.
She turned to Zippy. "It was going fine until this storm started up. Got caught in a tree and had to get out pretty quick. Becoming lightning barbecue ain't exactly on my bucket list." She grinned at Tag. "Reading a dirty book is, though. When're you gonna teach me words that'll help with that?"

"The lady wants to learn dirty words!" Goblin said approvingly. "I think that lesson should be a top priority. A dramatic reading of the mystery book might help." He focused his evil grin on Tag in particular. He didn't really intend to be mean; teasing shy people was just so easy.

If Tag could choose a moment to drop dead, this would be it.
"It -- it has a real-- really good story." She stammered, trying to defend her choice of reading material. It wasn't like she read "dirty" novels all the time. The last book she read was about the battle of Gettysburg; she simply wanted to balance out all the gore and bloodshed with silly romance.

"What's it about?" Goblin sat on the corner of the bed. The cat jumped into his lap, and he stroked it absently. Yes, he felt like being annoying today. Besides, he was in the girls' bunkroom, hanging out with a bunch of girls who were not his sister. Couldn't be bad.

Tag cleared her throat, absolutely that she had to speak about this novel in front of people who didn't know her all that well. If Zippy hadn't been there, as well, she would have just ran.
"A man." She started off, her voice barely above a whisper. "Who falls in love with a woman who he's not supposed to fall in love with."

"Let me guess, one of 'em's high-class and the other one's poor, but they start a forbidden affair." The cat yawned.

"Oh, that sounds absolutely thrilling!" Tree said, no trace of sarcasm in her voice. She sighed happily, thinking that it sounded like the kind of story she'd always dreamed would happen in her own life, as long as it came with some sort of adventure. She looked at Tag eagerly. "Is there mystery and intrigue and dashing duels for the lady's honor, as well?"

Zippy shot a warning look at Goblin, even though he was pretty entertaining. She knew he would worry Tag though, which was why she gave her friend a reassuring smile. "sounds juicy. Is it also well written?"

Goblin gave Zippy a wounded, innocent look, but he took the hint and waited for Tag to respond to the eager inquiries. Though he took the liberty of stealing a look or two at Tree while he waited. Her absurd enthusiasm brought so many sarcastic remarks to mind, yet there was something infectious about it nonetheless. She was certainly the polar opposite of Clara. In the end, he just flashed her an ambiguous grin that might have meant anything from I think you're an idiot to I think you're adorable.

Tag look at all three faces, staring at her and waiting for her response.
"There has been a little bit. But I-- I'm only halfway through. So, I assume so." She managed to get out, though she could hear the shakiness in her voice.

Wraith hated to engage in conversation with strangers, she really did. But she hated even more to see people gang up on someone who hated to engage in conversation with strangers.
"There's a duel in chapter eighteen," she said in a quiet deadpan from her bunk without turning around. "It's really quite thrilling." She'd been reading the book whenever Tag wasn't around, then painstakingly returning it to the exact position she'd found it in.

Tag turned around abruptly to look at Wraith.
"Oh, have you read it before?" She asked quietly.

"Parts of it," she admitted, squirming over the possibility that three strangers (plus her brother) were now looking at her. She sent a quick glance over her shoulder. Nope, just the shy girl. Tag. "I did think Arabella was kind of...passive."

"Clara likes girls who are aggressive, like her," Goblin said solemnly--and got hit in the face with a pillow, which Wraith had somehow managed to aim with deadly accuracy without even looking. The cat leapt out of the way with an indignant yowl. Goblin pushed the pillow aside and looked at the other girls pointedly. "See!"

The cat immediately dashed to Tag, and she picked it up gingerly, stroking its head and murmuring softly into its ear. Tag would talk way more to a cat she didn't know than to a person she didn't know. Was that sad?
