Tag opened the door to Annie's bakery, her coins jingling in the pocket of her tweed pants. She had saved up half her earnings for four days to get the biggest cinnamon bun in New York, and by George she was going to get one.
But first, she had to wait for Zippy.
She found an empty table near the back and slid into a seat, trying not to catch the attention of any of the more wealthy, society people in there. She looked a fright today, as usual.

Leo strolled into Annie's Bakery, trying yet again to see if the place had any more job openings. He was still far from his goal of a few hundred dollars- he needed cash to buy a nice suit, and catch the attention of one of the city's veterinarians. Leo was still dying for an apprenticeship with one of them, and he wasn't giving up.
One of the bakers noticed him walk in and shook his head, gesturing to him that there still wasn't any jobs available. Leo sighed and bought a sugar cookie, figuring it was always good to support the business.
That was when he noticed Tag.
Leo didn't notice a lot of people- in fact, he usually preferred to keep to himself, considering he was in the country illegally at all. But Tag was a newsgirl he had noticed for awhile, and was usually too shy to say anything to her. But here she was, sitting all by herself at Annie's, and he figured he might as well say hello.
"Hola, bonita. How are you today?" He asked her, smiling softly as he hovered by her table.

Tag's eyes went as wide as saucers. "Fine, thank you." Just because she was shy didn't mean she forget her proper English manners.
She had seen this boy before, but had never learned his name. He was a newsie, too, but most newsie boys were trouble. Oh, where was Zippy?

"Are you waiting for someone, querida?" Leo asked, gesturing to the open seat. "Or may I join you?"

"I'm waiting for someone." Tag answered quickly before realizing that sounded rather rude. "But she's 15 minutes late..." What did he actually call her?
She tucked a strand of golden brown hair behind her ear, trying very hard not to think of how awful her hair looked today. She was sure it was frizzy and unruly, and there just had to be dirt or something on her face. She just knew it.

"If you are waiting for Zippy, I saw her throwing up behind Tibby's an hour ago. I helped her back to the house, she's sleeping in the infirmary now," Leo told her, sitting down in the empty seat across from her. He saw Tag and Zippy together all the time, and was aware they were friends, and he figured that was who she was waiting for. "I'm Leo, by the way. I don't think we have formally met yet."

Tag's mouth dropped open and her eyes filled with dread. "I'm Lillian, but everyone calls me Tag. Is Zippy all right? Is she sick?" She was very concerned for her best friend and wanted to flee to her side right now. But Leo didn't seem worried. And... to be honest... he was kind of cute.
But still. Zippy, her best friend for a year now, might need her.

"I don't know," Leo admitted, taking a bite of his cookie. "If you want to leave to go to her, I will understand." But he hoped she would stay.

"Oh, dear." Tag muttered, biting her lip. "I fear Zippy won't take too kindly to my hovering. I tend to do that when someone I care about is ill."
She glanced toward the counter and noticed one cinnamon bun left. She tried not to look at it too longingly, but the icing was still melting on top... "Will you please excuse me?"

Leo nodded, watching her go to the counter. She was probably the sweetest girl he had ever met, and that was saying a lot since this was New York City. That was another reason why he wanted money; if he had some cash, he would be able to take out a nice girl like Tag to the theater and treat her really great.

Tag came back with the last cinnamon bun, her stomach growling and demanding to be filled with such sweet goodness.
"I know Zippy. She'd want me to have this." Tag told Leo with a small, shy smile on her face. She made eye contact for about a second before glancing away. Her knees were shaking under the table, but she wasn't sure if it was out of hunger, nervousness, or both. Before she could linger too long on this dilemma, she tore off a piece of the delicious treat and shoved it in her mouth. It was worth the four day's wait.

Leo chuckled. "This bakery is muy delicioso. Very delicious. I was hoping to get a job here, being a newsie isn't quite cutting it, yknow?"

"Tell me about it. I had to save for four days to get this." Tag replied once her mouth was empty, nodding to the cinnamon bun on her napkin. "Four days!"
Once in a while, Tag did work a decrepit old used bookstore a few blocks from the Lodging House, but her pay was almost worse than her pay as a newsie.

Leo chuckled, smiling at the cinammon bun. "Looks like it was worth though," he noted, watching her enjoy her treat.

Tag simply nodded seeing as she had just stuffed her mouth with a huge bite of the sweet, delectable dessert.
