Risk sat on the ground, papers strewn around him from the boxes Goblin handed to him a week earlier. He'd gone through a couple pages, figuring he'd find nothing when something caught his eye. Monk Eastman. He knew that name and would never forget it. Now, he was frantically searching through the boxes, trying to find more information about what was going on in the Refuge.

Goblin headed down the cellar stairs like he did several times a day, ignoring the skinny black cat trailing behind him, and blinked when he saw Risk practically up to his elbows in papers. "Didn't really expect you to get this enthusiastic about it..."

Risk jumped when he heard a voice, turning around to find the person he'd wanted to talk to. "I found out more than I expected," he said, his eyes scanning the papers. "I might be able to help you with the Refuge... but first, did you come up with something?"

"'Course," Goblin said--he'd had a whole three days or so, after all. "Ever heard of Sammy McKeys? Brooklyn newsie, one of Spot Conlon's righthand men, but he defected to the Bronx and took a bunch of flunkies with him. Wraith's more up on Brooklyn than I am...from what she tells me, these guys deserve to get arrested and worse." He dug a folded-up list out of his pocket and handed it to Risk. "Here are the names--you're on your own with the false evidence."

"Are you sure this is safe? He was Spot's righthand man," frowned Risk as he glanced at the list of names Goblin handed him. "I want this to be taken care of quietly and fast."

"He joined forces with the guy who got Spot's girl raped and stabbed," Goblin said grimly. "Spot and Brooklyn won't touch this--in fact, they'd probably give you a medal. And the Bronx newsies don't have enough power to shake a charge like this."

"I can work with that," nodded Risk, glad that Goblin had done his homework. Now, it was his turn to show his.
"Monk Eastman. Does that sound familiar to you?"

He shook his head. He'd done his best to compile a mental encyclopedia of all the gangs and major shady characters in New York--but the list was endless, and so were the aliases they used. That was why Risk, with his access to classified police knowledge, had given him fresh hope. Still, Goblin hadn't really expected him to turn up anything new.

"He's running the Refuge... and head of the gang behind everything," said Risk grimly. "And I know him."

Goblin's head jerked up sharply. Had Risk really just told him that he'd figured out who was behind it all? That he'd solved the mystery that had been plaguing him for the past year? His heart was suddenly pounding like a drum, but he managed not to show any more outward emotion. "You...know him? Like, personally?"

He nodded hesitantly. "I guess you can say that. I used to be a part of his gang," he said slowly, amazed that he was admitting this so easily to Goblin.

Goblin stared at him like he was some kind of fascinating jigsaw puzzle. "So you're a gangster who turned into a cop who's pretending to be a newsie? No wonder I couldn't figure you out." His mind racing with all this new information, he glanced at the stairs. "Look, I'm meeting a couple people down here soon to work on this whole shutting-down-the-Refuge project, so you might wanna clear out. What with the whole undercover thing."
Risk's potential usefulness to this project had just increased by about a hundred percent, but Goblin decided against outright asking him for help. He'd been trying to read this guy since he met him, and he knew Risk had looked through a lot of the files in that box, and...well, he just had a feeling.

"You're really set on doing this, aren't you?" said Risk, grabbing the papers around him and putting it back in the box. He was curious to see how far Goblin would go... and why he was doing this in the first place.

He shrugged, settling down on his overturned crate again. "Let's just say ruthless quests for revenge run in my family."

"Apparently," chuckled Risk, standing up and dusting himself off. "Right, well... don't go blabbing what I just told you. Not even Ershey knows about that... or what gang I used to belong to."
