"'Cause you actually have the brains to be smart," winked Risk. "I'm sure you've read more books than both Beth and I! We just want you to be safe, that's all... and get all the things we weren't able to have when we were little."

"Well, that's bloody stupid," Jo announced, narrowing her eyes. And for that second, she looked and sounded exactly like her aunt. It was terrifying.
Goblin cleared his throat. "You know, Jo, if you and Beth need a break from each other tonight, you can ask her to run you over to my place. Maggie's baked more cookies than the entire population of New York could ever consume."
Jo's eyes lit up--she squealed, hugged Risk, and bolted from the room to convince her aunt this was a good idea. Goblin beamed after her; now they'd gotten rid of Jo, Beth might actually be grateful to him, and Maggie wouldn't kill him for leaving her alone all evening. Being really manipulative paid off sometimes.

"That was good," smirked Risk as he watched Jo run after Beth. "So where's this house at?" He stood up and opened the door, peeking to see whether Goblin's plan worked.

"Upper West Side," he said. My old neighborhood. But he and Wraith had been on the East Side so long now that he barely thought about it. "We could take a cab."
"Take a cab where?" Macbeth's voice demanded as she finally poked her glaring face out of her bedroom. She had not been distracted by Jo's excited tales of cookies.

"Upper West Side," said Risk, flashing Macbeth his best smile. "Just helping out Sebastian with something. I'll be back soon!"

((Haha, I just couldn't leave her out. He'd be all lonely and jaded without her.))
Beth focused her glare on Goblin. "You're gonna get him killed one'a these days."
He squirmed under that glare. "Beth, no one gets killed on the Upper West Side!"
Beth snorted. "They just hide the bodies better." She crossed her arms and gave Risk a look. "Don't get killed by some swanky businessman. It'd be really embarrassing."

"You'd really think I'd let them do that?" muttered Risk, raising an eyebrow at her. ((Haha, I love them ))

"Yep," said Beth, smirking. She didn't really. "Well, Jo'll be gorging herself on cookies at Maggie's place when you get back, and I'll just be here, in bed. Reading. Alone. For hours." She gave him a rather different sort of look and then shut the door.
Goblin shook his head as he and Risk headed out the door. "What on earth is the deal between you two anyway?" Five or six years and he still couldn't figure them out.

"We're... close," chuckled Risk, shrugging. "We're not really anything but we're definitely... something. Just don't think about it too hard, it'll make your head hurt. How's Maggie, anyway?"

"She's great," he said cheerfully; "she's always great. Sometimes I bring home jumpy clients, and she bakes a cake and just talks to 'em--calms 'em right down." They reached the first floor, and Goblin opened it and almost had a heart attack, because his sister was standing right there, looking impatient.
"I've already got a cab waiting on the corner," she announced, motioning at it. "Hi, Alec," she added as an afterthought.

"Hi Clara," muttered Risk, raising an eyebrow at her before shaking his head. Some things never change. He followed the two siblings as they walked towards the cab. "How's the, uh, roof?"

"Hmm?" Wraith said. "Oh, yours. It's all right--not the best in the neighborhood, but it's got decent views of two streets and the alley out back."
Goblin rolled his eyes, boosted his tiny sister into the carriage, and climbed in after her.

"Right," chuckled Risk, climbing into the carriage with them. "So, what exactly should I be expecting here? Hysterical mother? Protective dad? Shady siblings?"

"Hysterical mother, for sure," Goblin said. "We haven't met the dad yet--actually, I might talk to him while you two search the room, see if I can get a read on him. It's always the dad, you know?" Wraith gave Risk a look behind her brother's back. Goblin was generally not a big fan of fathers. "Older brother, younger sister," he finished. "Haven't met them yet, either, so I can't say if they're shady or not."
