"One seventy five or I sit back down in my chair and don't help you." Jack crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow at her.

Lillian shrugged. "Fine, I'll find somebody else." She turned on her heel and started to walk out, praying to the Lord above he stopped her. She didn't know of anyone else who would help her.

Damn her, he really needed the money. "Fine! Come back, 150." He said and then sighed heavily.

She stopped, stood there a moment for dramatic effect, then turned back around to face him. "Deal. I'll meet you here tomorrow morning at 7."

"Fine," Jack said, then paused. "Wait a minute...you think you're coming with me? Are you insane?"

"I'm coming with you or the deal's off," Lillian replied with finality in her tone. She crossed her arms over her chest, showing him she wasn't going to budge.

"I feel like you are going to be a giant pain in the ass." Jack said to her.

"Well, you might be right. But I'll do whatever you tell me. I trust your judgement because you are, after all, a professional. But I'm going with you." She stared up at him, her wide eyes unyielding.

Jack looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath. He closed his eyes, rubbed the bridge of his nose and looked back down at her. "God help me. Fine. Fine!" he finally. "I'll be here, 7 sharp."

She stuck her hand out to shake his, to seal the deal. "It's been a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Kelly," she said, smiling sweetly up at him - maybe a bit too sweetly.

"Oh a huge pleasure," Jack smirked at her and shook her hand. Now that he was actually getting a good look at her she was a very pretty girl. Stop it Kelly, she's a client.

She pulled her hand away, not sure why it felt so tingly. She reached into her handbag and took out the last money she had, fifty dollars. "I believe that belongs to you."

"Thank you," Jack said, taking the money from her. He folded it in half and then stuck it in his pocket.

Lillian simply nodded at him before turning on her heel and walking out of his office. She then proceeded to gather most of her possessions at the boarding house, taking them to the general store and selling them. She almost cried when she handed over her grandfather's pocket watch, but she needed the money. Desperately.
When Lillian walked out of the store, she had enough money to rent a horse from the local stables, pay Mr. Kelly the rest of his money (if, indeed, he caught Clancey), and buy a train ticket home.
The next morning, at exactly seven o'clock, Lillian dismounted her horse and walked up to Jack's office door. She was glad she had decided on such an early start, as no one was around to stare at her wearing her brother's clothes. They were more comfortable and functional than her own clothes, and she wasn't about to sacrifice either of those for this journey.

Jack was inside finishing up a cigarette when he heard her at the door. "Come in, I'm almost ready to go." He called from inside.
