"I won't be surprised, though... you two have been spending a lot of time with each other. I mean, I hate him... he's my brother, I'm sorta supposed to, but he's not that bad, right?"

Macbeth shrugged, unhooking her arm from Ershey's to set a fresh pot of water boiling. "He's pretty good to talk to. He's good with Jo." Not bad to look at, either. The thought made her cheeks flame, but she wasn't about to say it and traumatize both Ershey and herself. "All the more reason he should go find himself a girl. Who ain't me."

"Aw, Beth, but why not you?" she persisted, following Macbeth closely behind. "He's actually... calm around you. And nice. And knowing Alec, that says something!"

She raised an eyebrow. "It ain't my job to make him calm and nice. He can deal with his character flaws his own damn self. And as for why not me...have you met me, Ersh? I mean, you're my best friend and I realize you can't be objective, but think about it for a second."

Ershey shrugged, giving her a hopeful smile. "Opposites attract?"

"Lies," Beth snapped, just as a waitress stuck her head in the door and yelled that someone had come in and ordered knockwurst. She sighed and went to get some from the ice box. "Bet he ain't even heard of Shakespeare..."

"He, uh, might've?" muttered Ershey, tying her hair in a ponytail as she readied herself to start serving tables. "So what if he hasn't? Does that really matter?"

"Only when it's just one item on a bloody long list!" She slammed the knockwurst into a pot of boiling water, then leapt back, cursing, as it splashed. Sean gave her a look, and she glared back. This was really not the safest job for her. "He'd want me to change, y'know. I mean, anyone in their right mind would take one look at me and say I oughta change, but I ain't gonna. If he thinks he likes me, well...I don't even know what the hell he likes. But it can't be me. Unless he's flat-out nuts."

"Then who else would it be, Beth? Half the girls at the lodging house are taken or hardly ever home," she pointed out. "And besides, you're the only other girl I really see him spend time with. Other than you, he's drinking away at the bar with random people he decides to become friends with..."

"So let him drink." She finally turned around and spoke somewhat calmly. "Look...I ain't gonna swoop in and rescue him from himself. I've been there and done that, 'member? Bloody exhausting. If he's gonna cut down on the drinking or the temper tantrums, he should do it for you--or, y'know, himself. I ain't gonna change him any more than he's gonna change me." She took the coffee off the stove and poured a cup to go with the knockwurst. "And also? I can't do romance. I don't even know how the hell it's s'posta work."

"You don't have to rescue him," sighed Ershey. "That's not what I meant. You just... make him better and there's nothing wrong with that." She suddenly thought of Michael and she paused, looking at the ground.
"Well, I still say there's nothing wrong with trying."

"Fine," said Beth with a bit of a mischievous smirk. "I'll corner your brother in an alley and ravish him. Ya happy?"

"Guilty," Macbeth agreed, though she'd just gone to a kind of intriguing place, fantasy-wise. Another waiter called in three orders of borsch, and she ladeled the finished stew into three bowls, admiring her foresight. "So how's Mush taking all this? Risk told me he knows, too."

"He's a bit... worried," answered Ershey. "You know how he gets. He's trying to be civil around Risk though... mostly 'cause he's helping us get out of trouble."
