"Yeah, I hope he's on top'a that," she muttered, thinking she really had to get acquainted with the mysterious Goblin and Wraith, who were supposedly helping him. The knockwurst finished cooking, and she stabbed it with a fork, stuck it in a bun, and slapped it on a plate with the coffee. "Ready to serve the hungry masses?"

"Don't get too mad at Sean," replied Ershey, shooting her a look as she grabbed the plate. "It's your first day! Just try to... make friends, alright?" And with a smile, she disappeared behind the door and out towards the tables.

Macbeth watched her go and shook her head, then stiffened when she heard snickering behind her. She spun around and gave Sean the glare to end all glares. "What the hell are you cackling about?"
"You," he said. "Possibly having a love life."
Beth stared at him a moment, then walked over and smacked him across the face.
He considered trying to get her fired for a good five seconds, then decided he'd deserved it, set the bowls of borsch on a tray, and went off to do his job--while Macbeth, of course, remained in the kitchen to brood.

After a couple hours, Ershey's arms were sore and her cheeks were hurting from smiling. Certain that the other waitresses could handle it for now, she made her way towards the back kitchen, wondering how Macbeth was holding up.
"Beth? You still alive there?"

"Yeah, but the next person who orders the goddamn peach pie won't be." She'd just put in the latest batch to bake, and the overwhelming smell of peaches was making her ill. "How's it going on your end? Please tell me we got a break soon."

"I'm just glad it's the morning shift. Most people don't wanna speak a word to you unless they need something," shrugged Ershey before glancing at the clock. "Five more minutes."

"Thank God." She watched the oven like a hawk and tried to breathe through her nose. "You happen to know where Risk and Jo might be?" If they were in the neighborhood, she might be able to track them down and visit with her niece.

"He wouldn't be selling with her," she smirked, leaning on the edge of the counter. "Lodging house? Maybe the park? Or he's probably eating somewhere."

She snorted. "Does he even bother selling anymore? I dunno what he thinks he's gonna do when he wraps up the whole..." She lowered her voice. "...Ericson case, and they make him go off and investigate something else. I mean, he can't just stay here." Which she didn't like to think about, and she told herself that was just because he helped with Jo so much.

"I think he only sells when he wants to," muttered Ershey, rolling her eyes. "So, uh, are we going to wait for your pie or you think Sean has a handle on this?"

"Sean can have all the pies," Beth said with gleeful spite, shooting one last glare at the oven. "Let's get outta here." She led the way toward the door, carefully avoiding the gazes of the customers. If she had Ershey's job, there'd be a bloodbath here within an hour.

"I'm right behind you," said Ershey excitedly, taking off the apron and throwing it on the side. "Are we on a hunt for Risk?" She glanced over at Macbeth, wondering what she was up to. "And, uh, Jo?"

She shrugged. "We could keep an eye out, I guess. Maybe grab food somewhere. Something they ain't got at Tibby's." She fully realized the benefits of free food, but it had been at least a week since she'd swallowed anything that wasn't on their menu.

"That's a bit difficult... we either pay like hell or try to find what's still at the lodging house," sighed Ershey.

"Lodging house?" Macbeth suggested. "Maybe that Script girl's been baking again." And that was probably where Risk and Jo were anyway.
