Risk raised an eyebrow at her. "Why? You'd be acting different if we were on a date?"

"Well, yeah. For one thing, I prob'ly would've mentioned it," she said, rolling her eyes and wishing they weren't having this ridiculous discussion. They were friends, which was fine, regardless of any stupid attraction she might feel, and there was no reason to play these maddening 'what if' games. He'd never look at her that way. He could have a girl like Raven, for God's sake.

Risk noted the change of look in her face. He couldn't help but smirk as he glanced over at her. "Are you... upset, Beth? That we're not out on a date?"

She seriously couldn't believe his nerve sometimes. If he'd gotten used to her friendship and forgotten how sharp her defenses could be, he was about to get a reminder. "Oh, yeah. Just like I'm still upset that my sister broke my favorite teacup when I was six," she said scathingly. "Grow the fuck up, Risk."

"What, I'm just asking! Don't take it personally," he chuckled, shaking his head at her.

"Why? Do you wish we were on a date?" she snapped, raising an eyebrow. If he was going to insist on these childish taunts, she was going to give it right back.

"Well, would you say yes?" he snapped right back.

"Would I...what? What are we even talking about?" she practically shouted. The shifting tone of the conversation had left her hopelessly confused, and confusion only made her twice as angry as usual.

"On a date!" retorted Risk, feeling surprisingly calm. "You said so yourself earlier. Would you say yes?"

She stared at him in astonishment, then finally snorted and turned away, striding briskly ahead of him. "Since you'd never ask me, I fail to see why it matters."

Risk rolled his eyes at her as he tried to catch up. "Beth, would you go on a date with me?" he shouted, getting impatient at her.

She froze in her tracks until he caught up. That was how long it took her to calm her racing pulse and reign in the many irrational outbursts that threatened to burst from her mouth. She drew in a breath, collected herself, and turned to look at him. "No," she said softly, and walked on at a fairly normal pace.

Risk stared, his shoulders falling and his smile fading. He looked at her for a couple seconds before he could find his voice again.
"Uh, r-really?"

"Yeah," she said, not looking at him. "Really."
She still didn't really understand why he'd asked--whether he'd planned it, whether it had just burst out as some kind of twisted challenge in the middle of their fight, whether he liked her or felt sorry for her or was just really desperate to get laid, but it didn't matter. After a moment, she added coolly, "We've got a good thing going. No reason to make things complicated. 'Sides, you said before we got the apartment that you weren't expecting nothing to happen."

"Y-yeah, right, that's what I said," nodded Risk, trying to gather his wits. He didn't know what came over him to ask Macbeth to go out on a date with him. He knew it was risky and stupid. She was never going to say yes. But it was Macbeth... and he should've known better.
"I'll, uh, meet you at home," he muttered before turning to walk away.
