Sapphy had, well, been avoiding Race. She felt outright guilty being around him. She didn't deserve him but at the same time she just couldn't let him go.
What's worse: Their first interaction that she'd instigate in over a week was to help her go ahead with her plan to come across as a more street savvy kid. Sapphy had a good head on her shoulders, but, she was not the kind of girl who could try to join a gang and be convincing.
She remembered Race wanting to teach her to palm an ace so many nights ago... And. Well... She wanted to help Goblin and all of them.
She wandered into the boys' bunkroom about a half hour before lights out, in search of Race. She actually took a shower for the occasion.

Race was on his bed playing Solitaire, tired from a long day with Sean while Rae was at work, but he jumped up and beamed the second Sapphy walked in. Not only was she looking for him (well, he hoped that's what she was doing), but she was actually looking cleaned-up and unbedraggled. "Hey," he said softly, crossing the room to meet her. "How's it going?"

Sapphy suddenly felt overwhelmed being in his presence. She'd known how worried he was and she knew he was trying to understand...
She leaned in and kissed him gently, briefly. She didn't close her eyes. She was so grateful for Race's endless patience.

He squeezed her hand, happy about the kiss, and the shower, and anything at this point, really. "Wanna go up on the roof?" he suggested tentatively. He didn't know what she wanted to talk about, or if it was even anything specific, but the bunkroom was pretty packed at this time of day.

She nodded, smiling slightly as she turned and lead Race to the window, their fingers still intertwined. On the fire escape, she kissed him again.

He returned the kiss gently, his hand on her back, caressing her hair. He'd been missing her so much, even though she was pretty much always around--he almost said so, then realized she probably knew, and it wouldn't make her feel any better anyway. He barely understood what she was going through, and Raven and the others who had noticed Sapphy's...slump...understood even less.

I love you.
She almost considered saying it out loud, but she bit it back. If she said those words to Race, she'd trap him forever. She didn't want him to feel that at all.

I love you, Race thought, but knew he couldn't say it, not now. It would just be more pressure, and she might feel like she had to say it back, or try harder or be happier or something, and all he wanted was for her to know he was here for her. "Any exciting rooftop plans?" he asked with a smile. "I've got a deck of cards that's getting real tired of Solitaire. Or we could just talk."

"Or both. Or whatever," she smiled at him happily, leading him up the stairs.

He followed her up and settled down near the edge of the roof, enjoying the cool breeze and Sapphy's hand in his. The fact that she didn't look hollow or miserable for once was making his heart sing. "Lot of new faces around here lately," he commented, pulling out the cards and fanning them out idly between them. He couldn't help thinking of his recent run-in with Script and her strange reaction when he mentioned Sapphy. ((Off to a Halloween parade! Be back later. )

She shrugged a little carelessly.
"That's nice and all, but it doesn't really matter to me. New faces, I mean... Which I guess is horrible to say," she deflated in thought. "I'm just trying to say I like being around you and seeing your face."
((And I'm off to bed. Have fun! <3 ))

"Back atcha," he said with a smile. "And it ain't that horrible. I ain't really been keeping track of 'em either, 'cept the girl who makes all the brownies...'cause, you know, brownies." He shuffled the cards. "Anything new with you, or have things just kinda stayed the same?" he asked gently--he wanted to avoid pressure, yeah, but he couldn't very well not ask how she was.

"Talked to David for the second time ever. It felt... Normal," she smiled slightly as she straddled the barrier wall, her left leg dangling over the street below. She leaned forward onto her elbows, watching Race's hands shuffle. "This feels normal, too."

"Really?" Race said in surprise. "Good old Davy...ain't really talked to him since that time when he tried to hit Jack." He bit his lip at the memory, trying not to laugh. "And normal is good, right?"

Sapphy leaned down and kissed Race's wrist.
"Normal is wonderful."
