She sighed, gathering up the papers because she didn't want to look at them anymore. "He's a lawyer and he has friends who are bankers, and they're talking about how I can't just pay her out, I have to take into account how much money's she's spent on repairs and construction, and then they're adding in the cost of the equipment that she's so graciously leaving me." She shoved the papers into the folder they came in. "What's she gonna do? Take a 5-range stove to Texas with her?"

He frowned. "You want me to talk to him?" His mind was already going in its usual directions. "I might be able to dig up some dirt on him..." He trailed off, looking guilty. "Or, uh, maybe blackmail wasn't the solution you were looking for."

Maggie lifted her eyes, looking amused. "Well, Mrs. Ingrid looked annoyed, so I think she might beat him into submission with her cane. I'll play along, for now, then I'll see if I need your, uh...services."

"Sounds good to me." He leaned across the table and kissed her, giving her a reassuring smile. "It'll work out." His hand played with something in his pocket. No, not the right moment yet.

She smiled at him, kissing him back. Then she remembered. "Oh! I made you something!" She pushed her chair back moving to the counter, bringing back a plate of cupcakes. Each one was decorated, some with Sherlock Holmes-style hats, some with magnifying glasses, some with little footprints, all made out of icing.
"Happy Wednesday!"

((I JUST DIED OF CUTENESS. DIED.))
His mouth fell open as he stared at the cupcakes. He couldn't even speak for a moment. "You...you made me detective cakes? Because it's Wednesday?" He got up, took the plate from her, set it on the table, kissed her hard, pulled something out of his pocket, and held it out to her.
It was a ring--a little two-toned ring, silver and gold braided together. The Brewers were very, very grateful for the safe return of their missing daughter, and Upper West Side folks knew how to show their gratitude. "Maggie? Will you marry me?"

((It's TOTALLY something she would do! Like all the time!))
She was just about to respond about the cupcakes, then nearly passed out when he held out the ring. "I--what?" She looked up at him, gaping, overwhelmed with love and sheer confusion. "You--that's a ring..." And a gorgeous one, at that.

He nodded shyly. "Well, I thought you should have one...so I secretly measured your finger a few nights ago..." He stopped before it turned into a full-on nervous ramble.

"You--you measured my..." She blinked at him, staring, her brain slowly coming back to life enough to figure what was going on. "You--you want to marry me? You're asking me to marry you?"

"I do...and I am." He was practically holding his breath. Yes, Maggie had been pointedly mentioning marriage for years, but what if she changed her mind now that he was actually asking? Decided it was all a huge mistake? Or, hey, what if he'd done it wrong? Maybe he'd said the wrong thing. Maybe the ring wasn't nice enough. Maybe she thought he'd just been trying to one-up her on the cupcakes!
"I love you, Magdalen Martin," he said softly. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you...what do you say?"

She stared at him another moment, opened mouthed, and then her eyes welled up and she flung herself at him, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes! Ohmygod, yes!"

He beamed and pulled her into a hug, kissing her nose and forehead and hair before he finally settled on her lips. "I'm glad," he murmured without breaking the kiss. Almost as an afterthought, he took her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger.

She sighed as she held her hand out in front of her, the way every girl who'd just gotten engaged did. "Oh, Sebastian. It's perfect. You're perfect." She looked up at him, tears slipping out of her eyes. She moved to hold him again, kissing him. "I love you."

"I love you too," he said happily, kissing her back and not bothering to argue about the 'perfect' comment. That would definitely be Maggie, not him. "Cupcakes to celebrate?" he suggested, grinning before he went in to kiss her again, brushing back her hair. They were getting married. He could hardly believe it, and yet he also realized at that moment, with both of them so absurdly happy, that it was about damn time.

She laughed, lips on his, not able to get enough of him. "Cupcakes to celebrate." She picked up that plate, carrying it to the livingroom and setting it on the coffee table. "You know. If I had known that Detective Cupcakes would get me a ring, I would have made them, like, five years ago." She flopped onto the couch, grinning up at him.
