He nodded, then moved away, walking down the porch steps to the waiting car. He got in, put his hand to the window, and then he was gone.

((The end!! ...Just kidding.))
The first month was probably the worst, if Rose had to choose. Billy kept asking when his daddy would come home, and he slept in his parent's bed every night, waking up occasionally with nightmares. Rose cried almost every day while Billy was at school, and she checked the mail frequently for a letter from Tyler. After the first month, Rose and Billy went down to the farm where daddy worked and took their pick from a litter of puppies. They walked home with a clumsy Basset Hound, and Billy decided to name him Wilson after the President.

((Haha!))
Tyler had made it through boot camp, even as one of the older men there. He ended up being trained as an Army medic, and was sent to the front lines in France. He wrote letters as often as he could, but never told Rose how bad it was in the trenches.
He was surrounded by death and pain and horror. And all he wanted was to go home.

Rose also never told Tyler how bad it was at home - mainly just how much she missed him and cried about it. Billy was slowly getting better, but he still asked about daddy all the time.
Once they hit the two month mark, Rose's letters started mentioning a surprise waiting for him when he got home. She would tell him about Billy's school work, how Wilson was getting so big (and how he kept her and Billy company at night, seeing as he slept in the bed with them), local town gossip, and the like. And she would end each the letter with "Your surprise is waiting for you! Hurry home, Tiger. Millions of hugs and kisses. Love, Your Rose."

Tyler didn't understand why Rose would by him a present so early, but it made him smile. She must have done it to keep up hope. He told her how much he loved her, how much he missed her and Billy, how he couldn't wait to see the puppy...
And then one day the letters stopped coming.

Rose got panicked. He wasn't writing, but nobody had come to her door telling her his body had been found. Maybe his body hadn't been found. Maybe he'd been kidnapped and taken as a war prisoner. The possiblities were endless. All she knew was that he needed to come back to her. He needed to.
One sunny day, Rose was out in the side yard hanging up the freshly washed bedsheets, her back to the street.

A car drove up the road, pulling in front of the house. Out of the car came Tyler, limping, using a cane as another soldier took out his bag for him, carrying it to the porch.

Rose quirked an eyebrow as she heard a car pull up and doors closing. Of course, she immediately thought it was someone coming to tell her that her husband had been killed. She dropped the laundry basket and rushed to the front of the house. She stopped in her tracks when she saw him, her hands flying up to cover her mouth and uncover her three-and-a-half month big belly.

He turned, seeing her, nearly falling over with relief. He didn't even notice her belly right away, eyes so focused on her face. He limped over to her as fast as he could, then stopped when he saw her bump, blinking. "Rosie..?"

She couldn't stand it any longer. She closed the distance between them and threw her arms around his neck, happy tears immediately springing to her face. She pressed her stomach against his as hard as she dared. "Surprise," she murmured into his hair, laughing softly through her tears.

He buried his face in her neck, nuzzling her, arms tight around her. "Oh, Rosie...Rosie..." He'd been feeling guilty that he hadn't even last four months in the field before getting himself shot, that he wasn't able to keep helping the war effort, but his bum leg meant he could go home. To his apparently growing family.

She pulled back, framing his face in her hands, her eyes shining as she looked into his. "What happened? Are you okay?" she asked frantically, her expression changing from ecstatic to worried then back to ecstatic as she remembered who was playing in the backyard. "BILLY!" she cried, glancing over her shoulder before looking back at Tyler.

He chuckled, feeling himself get a little weepy. "I'm fine. Got shot in the leg, shattered my knee. I'm always gonna have a limp, but I can walk." He kissed her then, needing to taste her.

She kissed him soundly, tasting her own tears she did so. She didn't even pull away when she heard a loud squeal and running footsteps, a telltale sign that Billy had seen his daddy. She felt a force hit their legs and arms wrap them.

He oofed into the kiss, then laughed, bending down to pick up Billy, tossing him a little bit before hugging him against his body. "Hey, there, buddy. Were you good for yer mama?"
