Rose had her mass of blonde curls tied up as she scrubbed at the dishes, trying to get six-year-old Billy to go play something -- anything -- so she could finish before daddy got home.
"But mom! I wanna play catch!"
Rose grit her teeth, rinsing off a plate and setting it on the drying rack before turning to the little boy, who was the spitting image of his father. "You know I'm awful at that. Daddy will be home soon, why can't you wait?"
"Because! I want to play now!"

Tyler was coming in through the front door just in time to here Billy's whining. "William Henry McGowan, are you givin' yer mama a hard time?" He hung up his coat on the rack by the door.

Billy immediately ran to the door, practically jumping on Tyler because he knew he would catch him. Rose just smiled to herself, washing the last dish before turning and leaning on the counter.
"Mommy won't play catch with me," Billy said, frowning as he held onto his daddy's neck.
Rose let out a laugh. "I wonder why," she muttered.

Tyler scooped up his son, chuckling. "It's rainin' outside, Billy, and ya know what yer mama says about playin' ball in the house." He ruffled Billy's hair, walking into the kitchen, ducking down to kiss Rose. "Hey, baby."

Rose smiled against Tyler's lips as Billy let out a noise of disgust. "Hi Tiger," she said softly. "Did you hear anything new about the war?"

((Back!))
Tyler's face fell a little, and he frowned. "We'll talk about it later." His eyes went to Billy a second, then back to hers. "Tonight."

"Okay," she said with a nod. She tried not to let her anxiety show, because from the look on Tyler's face, it wasn't good news he had to tell her. "Can you go take your son somewhere and give him some attention so I can start making dinner?"

He nodded and kissed her again, then set Billy down. "Go get yer jacket, Champ. What say you we sit on the porch swing and watch the rain for a while?"

When Billy ran off to get his jacket, Rose pulled him in for another kiss. "I missed you," she said, as she did almost every day or whenever they got alone time.

He took the opportunity to slide his arms around her waist, nuzzling the crook of her neck. "Mm, I missed you too, Sugar." He nibbled on her neck. "Ya smell good."

"Lemony fresh, I should say," she muttered, a smirk playing at her lips as she placed her hands on his chest. She was so curious as to what he had to talk to her about, but she knew better than to push. She would just be patient and wait until later.
"Daaaaad, let's go!"

He smirked against the side of her neck, kissing it one last time before pulling away and moving over to Billy. "One of these days, kid, yer gonna understand why I like kissin' on yer mama so much." He led billy outside and flopped onto the porch swing to wait for dinner.

Rose just laughed to herself as she went to the fridge, getting out a chicken and starting on dinner. Billy sat down on the swing next to Tyler, talking about anything and everything for the next half hour or so.

Once he couldn't keep Billy entertained anymore, they headed back inside. "Hope yer ready, Sugar, 'cause I'm outta things to occupy this son a' yours."

Billy ran inside and flung his arms around Rose's legs. She picked him up, even though he was a tiny bit too old to be held by his mama, and hugged him. "I love you, mama," he said in his adorable Southern accent.
"Love you, too, Billy Bug. And you're in luck, dinner's just on the table now." She walked over and plopped him down in a chair before sitting down herself.
The McGowan family lived in a spacious house in Louisville, Kentucky, filled with all the modern conveniences. Rose's grandmother had died about ten years ago; apparently she had given up her uncaring attitude toward Rose because she'd left her all her money, which turns out, was quite a lot. Tyler holding a steady job and good investments made it possible for Rose to stay at home.
