She kissed him back, scooting further up his lap so she could be closer. But she pulled away after a bit, resting her forehead against his. "But we've been married for years now. And Billy is 6 already. So, what is it?" She didn't want to delay it any longer, like ripping off a bandage. Just get it over with.

He sighed. "Ya never did get very good at just takin' a damn compliment."He kissed her again, because he needed to. "President Wilson signed a declaration of war. America's in on it now, with that war in Europe."

She leaned back, her eyes wide as she let out a small gasp. "Really? Well, I shouldn't be surprised, it was only a matter of time, wasn't it...?"

He lifted a shoulder. "I guess it was." He glanced up at her. "They want as many men as they can get, Rosie. The age limit's 40..."

"So, you'll be going, then," she said matter of factly. Just because she'd somewhat prepared herself for this - who was she kidding, thinking he wouldn't go if and when America did enter the war? - didn't mean her heart wasn't slowly breaking now.

He sighed, hanging his head. "Baby, I gotta. What kind a' man would I be, what would I be teachin' Billy if I didn't?"

"I know, I know," she murmured, a lump already forming in her throat. She stroked the back of his neck, fingertips playing a bit with his hair.

He wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing his cheek to her breast. "God, baby, I love you so much. I wouldn't go if I didn't have to."

"I know, Tyler," she assured him, kissing his hair and holding him tightly. "I love you, too."

He nuzzled his cheek against her chest, fingers rubbing her back. "Ya gonna be okay without me? If ya can't handle Billy and the house on yer own, I--I won't go."

"I'll be fine. Billy and I, we'll be okay." Even if she thought otherwise, she would lie. She knew Tyler as well as she knew herself - maybe even better - and he would be miserable if he didn't go help protect his country, do all he could to help.
She put her fingers under his chin and pulled him up to look at her. "But you've gotta promise that you'll come back to us."

He gulped, setting his jaw. He'd cried once in his life -- once -- at the birth of his son. He wouldn't cry now, not when he needed to be strong enough for all of them. "Ya know I will, Rosie. Ya know I will."

She held his chin in her hand firmly, trying to swallow the lump in her throat away. "Don't try and be a hero, Tyler. Don't you dare. I know --" she paused to take a breath, a tear escaping and sliding down her cheek. "I know you'll be there to protect our country, but you have a wife and a child who love you. Who need you. Billy needs his father. And I need you," she told him, although she was sure he knew this already. The tears were now falling freely as she looked at him.

He moved to frame her face in his hands, kissing her cheeks, tasting her tears. "Oh, baby. Baby, I'm gonna come home. I swear I'm gonna come home. And it'll be me, you and Billy forever, I swear."

She buried her face in his neck, wanting to be as close to him as possible right now. "When do you have to report for duty?" she muttered against his skin, sniffing away her tears.
